Am I in Porn? is a non-profit picture-based search engine built to allow people to search for and take action against online content uploaded without their permission. It aims to help victims of revenge porn to find content and take it down.[1][2]
History
Am I in Porn? was founded by Lukas Henseleit, Jonas Schnabel and Yannick Schuchmann in 2018 after a member of their friendship group became a victim of revenge porn.[1][3]
In 2020, the website became public and has helped many victims remove explicit content from pornographic sites.[1]
Tool
Users are able to visit the website and upload a picture of themselves.[1][2] The algorithm will then analyze the picture and compare it to their database, covering over ten million videos.[1][2] Results can contain up to 30 links ordered by probability of a match based on the image provided.[4]
No copies of the image are saved and the service allows the user to remain anonymous.[1]
Users will then be informed if any pornographic material matching the image uploaded has been found. If any material is found, the user is given a step by step on how to remove the content from the sites.[2] The user will also receive information on how to access both legal aid and mental health services.[5]
Political engagement
Am I in Porn? is a backer of the Petition "#NotYourPorn" on Change.org.[6] The petition calls for stricter regulations on pornographic websites as well as improvements to the laws surrounding revenge porn.[6]
Criticism
Erotic portals are concerned that people may use it to find pornographic content for other people they know. They believe that people may use third party images to gain information on people and perhaps even abuse any content found.[7][8] The General Data Protection Regulation explicitly forbids the processing of biometric data to identify people and “the right to own the picture” specifically forbids the use of images without explicit consent from people portrayed.[9] Stefan Brink, Baden-Wüttembergs Regional Data Protection Officer, has claimed that the website is operating illegally.[10]
