All That Glitters was the 104th and final episode of the hit 1950s action adventure juveniles series Adventures of Superman, based on the popular DC Comics flagship hero Superman. Directed by series star George Reeves, it aired on ABC Network on April 28, 1958. |

==Plot Outline== |
Eccentric Professor Pepperwinkle discovers a method how to make gold from basic metals. He is then blackmailed by criminals to make them rich, but what they don't know is that he knows the secret of how to make any normal human into Supermen. The episode features a memorable dream sequence, in which both Jimmy Olsen and Lois Lane mysteriously acquire superpowers of their own, very similar to that of Superman's. During the last scene of the episode, and the series as well, Jimmy and Lois recount their dreams to Perry White and Clark Kent. The last line later turned out to be darkly ironic than anyone could have imagined. When he is told by Jimmy that "Golly, Mr. Kent, you'll never know what it is like to be like Superman," Clark responds, as usual, with the signature Superman wink at the camera: "No, Jimmy, I guess I never will." |

==Cancellation, Revival, and Demise of the Series== |
It was decided that the show, high in the ratings, had run its course, and the producers soon agreed the show would be cancelled. During the summer of 1958, the cast and crew were told that there would be no new episodes to be filmed. The show was syndicated, in an effort to recoup some of the money spent on the show's overall budget, in which it did well. By 1959, the producers began to consider a revival of the show. One idea was a movie called Superman and the Secret Planet, but that was put aside for possible later development. Two seasons of 26 episodes were commissioned to begin airing in 1960, and the cast was coaxed into coming back. However, John Hamilton, who played Perry White, died of a heart attack, so actor Pierre Watkin, who played White in the serials, was hired to replace him. By mid-1959, contracts were signed, costumes re-fitted and new scripts and teleplays were written. Allegedly, Lex Luthor was a name tossed around to appear on the show as a first-ever recurring villain. In the documentary Look, Up In The Sky: The Amazing Story of Superman, Noel Neill, who played Lois Lane, mentioned that George Reeves was very excited to go back to work. He had been promised creative input on the next two seasons, which were to be action-packed and serious as the first season, and he was slated to direct several episodes himself. Sadly, the chance to revive Superman and make it serious again never became a reality. |

On June 16, 1959, Reeves was shot in his bedroom with a Luger, still never confirmed to be murder or suicide. His demise was not the end of the series in the producers' eyes. Two proposed pilots, The Adventures of Superpup and The Adventures of Superboy, were never picked up as a series. Upon returning from Europe, Jack Larson was contacted with the option of a spin-off called "Superman's Pal, Jimmy Olsen." Focusing on the cub reporter's exploits, the show would also feature stock footage of Superman with a look-alike stunt double to be filmed from behind. Disgusted at the thought, Larson flatly turned down the macabre idea out of hand, and the series was truly over. |

==Trivia== |
*Last episode of the series. |
*Until the 2000s new alternate universe series Smallville surpassed it's one-hundreth episode, Adventures of Superman was the longest running Superman drama for over 54 years. |
*If looked closely at, one can see Reeves' hair going gray at the temples, as well as the fact that his once lean, muscular build is gone. |
