Present
In January 2014, ABC-the senior of Spanish press- published on its business supplement an interview with Alejandro Betancourt López. In this interview, Betancourt explained Derwick’s strategy to become a major supplier of technology for Latin-America.[3]
López is now subject of a scandal following a bribery for 50 million dollars, using his company[4] due to his lack of experience in order to receive those contracts the Venezuela Goverment is giving them.
The website InfodioLeaks has exposed a major scandal over Aleandro Lopez Betancourt's company in the form of deals that the Venezuelan State, through its utterly corrupt officials (like BARIVEN's President Guillermo Arellano[5]) made with the bolichicos of Derwick Associates: Leopoldo Alejandro Betancourt Lopez, Francisco Convit Guruceaga, Francisco D'Agostino, and Pedro Trebbau Lopez.[6] For months Derwick Associates have been pumping stories, placed in different media around the world, about their commitment to Venezuela. All of this public relations effort begun after scrutiny revealed Derwick Associates as nothing more than a suitcase corporation, a fly by night, that obtained 12 no-bid contracts in 14 months to build power plants. The principals of the firm had no previous experience, whatsoever, in the energy sector, and yet they were awarded all these contracts. Ultimas Noticias's Cesar Batiz revealed overbilling and odd transactions between BARIVEN and Derwick Associates.[7] InfodioLeaks has received several documents through a leak, that shows the relationship between Derwick Associates and the Venezuelan government.[8]
Awards
In December 2013, Alejandro Betancourt, picked up the award by the Spanish magazine ‘Capital’ to ‘The best technological initiative in Latin-America’.[9] The award recognized the construction of Derwick’s TTC (Turbine Technology Center).
