WeatherWriter (talk | contribs) m WeatherWriter moved page Al-Ahli Arabi Baptist Hospital airstrike to Al-Ahli Arabi Baptist Hospital explosion: Every source I have seen is saying “explosion”, and this is from western sources, Israel, and Hamas. Instead of airstrike, “explosion” is the most appropriate wording until attacker is confirmed. |

On 17 October 2023, amid the 2023 Israel–Hamas war, an explosion occurred in the courtyard of Al-Ahli Arabi Baptist Hospital, in which thousands of displaced Palestinians were seeking shelter. Reported casualties varied from 200 to over 500 dead.[1] The explosion is the deadliest single one in the wars fought between Gaza and Israel since 2008.[2]
The cause of the explosion is disputed. The Gaza Health Ministry claimed the explosion was caused by an Israeliairstrike.[3][4] The Israeli Defense Forces initially stated that the reason for the fire at the hospital was "unclear" and that they were investigating the issue;[5] the IDF later claimed that the explosion was caused by a failed rocket launch by Hamas.[6]
Background
The hospital has been in operation since 1882. It was founded by the Church of England’s Church Mission Society and was later run as a medical mission by the Southern Baptist Conference between 1954 and 1982. It returned to the Anglican Church in the 1980s.[7]
Since the evacuation of Northern Gaza began, Al-Ahli Arabi Baptist Hospital took hundreds of those displaced in response to the growing humanitarian crisis in Gaza. The hospital was damaged by Israeli rocket fire late 14 October, leaving 4 staff members injured, according to a statement by the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby.[8] Before the airstrike on October 14, the hospital sheltered around 6,000 displaced persons; subsequently many of them fled, with around 1,000 remaining in the courtyard.[9] On 16 October Israel ordered 21 hospitals in Gaza to evacuate.[10]
Reactions
Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas declared 3 days of mourning following the deadly event and canceled a planned meeting with American President Joe Biden.[11][2] Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau described the attack as "horrible" and "unacceptable".[12] The Director-General of the WHO, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, condemned the attack.[11] Egypt, Qatar, Iran, Jordan, and Turkey also condemned the attack.[1]
The attack sparked protests against the Palestinian Authority in Ramallah.[11]
