Rolling Papers examines Baca’s cannabis reporting at The Denver Post, which became the first major media outlet to appoint a marijuana editor and dedicate comprehensive coverage to the legalization of cannabis in America with the launch of The Cannabist website. Ricardo Baca is an American journalist, entrepreneur and thought leader in the legal cannabis space who currently serves as founder of the cannabis content agency Grasslands, which he founded in March 2017. He was previously a marijuana editor, pop music critic and entertainment editor at The Denver Post, founder and editor-in-chief at The Cannabist, co-founder and executive director of The Underground Music Showcase, founder and editor of Reverb and TV critic at the Corpus Christi Caller-Times.
Baca founded The Denver Post’s industry-leading marijuana news site, The Cannabist, in 2013, where he extensively covered the legalization of cannabis in Colorado and marijuana news across the country. He has received numerous accolades for his trailblazing work at The Cannabist, including recognition as one of Fortune magazine’s 7 Most Powerful People in America’s Marijuana Industry[1] and being named the world’s “most prestigious” marijuana editor[2] by VICE.
In December 2016, Baca left The Denver Post to start his new cannabis content agency, Grasslands, where he works directly with leading executives and businesses in the cannabis and hemp industries. He continues to write about cannabis issues for publications including Esquire.com[3], Cannabis Now magazine[4], The Denver Post[5] and The Daily Beast, where he pens the weekly column Joint Ventures.
Education & Early life
Baca was born and raised in Westminster, Colorado. He attended Westminster High School, and received a full-ride journalism scholarship from the now-shuttered Rocky Mountain News newspaper to attend Metropolitan State University of Denver, where he graduated with a B.A. in journalism in 1999.
Career
Baca became the first marijuana editor for a mainstream news organization[6] when he was appointed The Denver Post’s marijuana editor in November 2013, where he spearheaded the formation of The Cannabist website, a division of the Post covering cannabis news and culture.
He steered the Post’s coverage of marijuana legalization with investigative pieces exploring the burgeoning cannabis industry and how it is regulated by state and local officials. His work examined problems with the potency of edible marijuana products[7], the often-illegal use of pesticides in commercial cannabis grows[8], and covered the changing cultural norms around marijuana. Baca’s investigative journalism on the subject lead to a number of regulatory changes in Colorado and elsewhere - including a 2015 executive order issued by Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper[9] that told state agencies that any marijuana grown with unapproved pesticides was a threat to public safety and should be removed from commerce and destroyed.
Baca also produced and hosted nearly 100 episodes of The Cannabist Show, a talk show and podcast featuring in-depth interviews with some of America’s top cannabis entrepreneurs, researchers and government regulators - not to mention the occasional celebrity or professional athlete.
Prior to founding The Cannabist, Baca served as The Denver Post’s pop music critic from 2002 to 2013, and The Post’s entertainment editor from 2011 to 2013. In 2007, he founded Reverb, formerly the Rocky Mountain region’s top music blog produced by The Denver Post, which has since expanded to include broader entertainment coverage under the name The Know[10]. Baca also co-founded The Underground Music Showcase[11] (a.k.a. The UMS), the biggest independent music festival in the Rocky Mountain region, and served as executive director of the festival from 2005 to 2010.
From 1999 to 2002, Baca served as TV critic at the Corpus Christi Caller-Times, where he covered television, film, radio and pop culture, and wrote a weekly column that anchored the Sunday paper’s TV Guide section.
While pursuing his undergraduate degree between 1995 and 1999, Baca also worked at the Rocky Mountain News as a full-time staff intern.
In December 2016, Baca announced he was leaving The Denver Post after 15 years at the award-winning newspaper, and in March 2017, he founded the startup cannabis content agency Grasslands, where he works with leading businesses and individuals in the marijuana and hemp industries and oversees a team of communications veterans hailing from careers in publicity, journalism, marketing and copywriting.
The Grasslands team manages the public presence of brands and individuals in the legal cannabis space, and ensures businesses and leaders are seen and understood by customers, influencers and media professionals. They specialize in thought leadership work, content writing, ghost writing, publicity and marketing campaigns, social media development and maintenance, content marketing and more.
Baca continues to write for top publications, including Esquire.com, Cannabis Now magazine, The Denver Post and The Daily Beast, where he pens the weekly column Joint Ventures.
