Composition and background
"3.6.5", according to the album description on Korean music site Naver Music, belongs to the pop, dance and rock music genres and has a 'bright and cheerful melody'.[2] The piece was composed and arranged by a team of foreign music producers including Christian Fast, Henrik Nordenback and the veteran Australian songwriter Hayden Bell. Both Fast and Nordenback made their debut in the Korean music industry with "3.6.5". Where as, Bell had previously collaborated with Exo's fellow label-mate BoA producing the pop song "I Spy" from her 2005 Korean studio album Girls on Top.
The lyrics of the Korean version of the song were penned by the songwriter Cho Yoon-kyung, who had also contributed his skills in writing lines for Exo's "Angel" from their first EP Mama released in April 2010.[3] The English part of the lyrics was provided by Didrik Thott.[2] Wang Yajun wrote the Chinese version of the song as well as for two other tracks on the album, namely "Baby, Don't Cry" and "Don't Go", as well as of "Mama", the title track from their first EP Mama. He is also known for providing lyrical content for songs of Exo's labelmate Super Junior-M.[4] The lyrics speak in regards to the happiness that the pure-hearted people feel when they fall in love.[2]
The Korean version, was recorded by Exo-K and included as the sixth track in the Korean (Kiss.) version of group's first studio album XOXO released on June 3, 2013. The Chinese version, recorded by Exo-M, was included in Chinese (Hug.) version of the same album, released on the same date.
