The 2023 NRL Grand Final will be the conclusive and premiership-deciding game of the 2023 National Rugby League season in Australia. It will be contested between the Penrith Panthers and the Brisbane Broncos on Sunday the 1st of October at Accor Stadium in Sydney. Kick off is scheduled for 7:30pm AEDT and the referee will be Adam Gee.
The match was preceded by the 2023 NRL State Championship and the 2023 NRL Women's Grand Final. The match will be broadcast live throughout Australia by the Nine Network.
Background
This will be the first NRL grand final between the Penrith Panthers and the Brisbane Broncos, and the first to feature both a New South Wales and Queensland based side since 2005. The Panthers, who became the first side since the Melbourne Storm in 2009 to reach four consecutive grand finals, are aiming for a fifth premiership, after defeating Canberra Raiders in 1991, Sydney Roosters in 2003, South Sydney Rabbitohs in 2021 and Parramatta Eels in 2022. The Panthers are also aiming to be the first side to win three consecutive premierships since Parramatta in 1981, 1982 and 1983. It was Ivan Cleary's fifth grand final appearance as a coach, after previously losing with the New Zealand Warriors against Manly Sea Eagles in 2011, and losing with Penrith against Melbourne Storm in 2020.[1]
Meanwhile, the Broncos are aiming for their seventh premiership victory; their most recent being against the Melbourne Storm in 2006. Their last grand final appearance was a defeat to the North Queensland Cowboys in 2015. The match is Kevin Walters' first grand final appearance as a coach.[2]
The Panthers finished the 2023 regular season in first place after eighteen wins and six losses, while Brisbane finished second with an identical record, with the tiebreaker being Penrith's superior points differential.[3]
