The 2023 European Weightlifting Championships is an upcoming weightlifting competition scheduled to be held in Yerevan, Armenia, from 15 to 23 April 2023.[1][2][3]
Incident
During the opening ceremony of the championship, one of the attendees set fire to the flag of Azerbaijan, he was immediately detained and the flag was replaced.[4][5][6] Armenian designer Aram Nikolyan, who burned the Azerbaijani Flag, was the designer of the opening ceremony.[7] Azerbaijan did not compete at the competition after this incident.[6] Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Youth and Sports said the incident showed that “when such an atmosphere of hatred reigns in Armenia, security is not ensured, the normal participation of Azerbaijani athletes in competitions is impossible due to psychological pressure.”[8] As reported: "Animosity between Armenia and Azerbaijan has risen in recent months with the blockade of the only road leading from Armenia to the ethnically Armenian region of Nagorno-Karabakh within Azerbaijan. Nagorno-Karabakh and adjacent territories came under the control of ethnic Armenian forces backed by Yerevan in 1994, but a six-week war in 2020 returned much of the area to Azerbaijan’s control".[8][9]
