On April 28, 2023, five people, including an eight-year-old boy, were shot and killed in a mass shooting in Cleveland, Texas, United States.[2] A manhunt is underway for the male suspect, a neighbor of the deceased.[3]
Shooting
Police said the incident occurred at 11:31 p.m. CDT, when officials from the San Jacinto County Sheriff's Office received a call about harassment in the town of Cleveland, 50 miles (80 km) north of Houston.[1][4] According to the Sheriff's Office, there were 10 people at the home before the shooting occurred,[5] while a relative of one of those at the house said that there were 12 people.[3]
According to police, the incident began when the suspect was asked by a neighbor (whose baby was trying to sleep) to stop firing his AR-15 rifle in his yard. The drunken suspect refused, and the neighbor warned that he would call the police. The suspect allegedly returned to his home to retrieve the rifle and proceeded to enter the neighbor's home, and started shooting. Five people were shot and killed, four of whom died at the scene, and the fifth was later pronounced dead after being transported to a hospital. Three minors were transported to a hospital after they were found covered in blood, but were physically uninjured.[1][3]
