The 2011 Jerusalem bus bombing was a bomb attack which took place in a bus stop next to bus number 74 near the Jerusalem International Convention Center complex in central Jerusalem, Israel on 23 March 2011 at 15:00.[3]
The bomb injured 39 people with one woman later dying from the injuries sustained.[1][2]
Within the few hours after the attack no group had claimed responsibility.
Background
Two weeks before the attack, a pipe bomb exploded in a garbage bag in southern Jerusalem. A municipal worker lost his hand in the blast. No group claimed responsibility and there were no arrests.[4]
Attack
On March 23, 2011, a bomb left in a bag next to a telephone pole near the Jerusalem Central Bus Station was detonated.[5] The bomb, weighing between one and two kilograms and packed with shrapnel,[2] exploded at a crowded Jerusalem bus stop, blowing out the windows of the Egged bused 74[5] The explosion injured 39 people and one woman later died from the injuries she sustained from the explosion.[2]
The Telegraph described the moments after the blast: "minutes before 3pm, the ominous crump of an explosion echoed through Jerusalem. Shoppers on Jaffa Street, the city's principal thoroughfare, paused mid-stride and then began to run. The sudden eruption of wailing sirens moments later confirmed what many in a city inured to violence had instinctively suspected immediately: the unofficial ceasefire in Jerusalem was over."[6]
When ZAKA, a community emergency response team of volunteers, arrived at the crime scene, they found "two women lying in huge pools of blood on the pavement. [They] began resuscitation immediately and were soon joined by other medical personnel."[7]
Perpetrators
The individual perpetrators of the attack are not known, but Palestinian Islamic Jihad has claimed responsibility.[8]
