Following the 2010 Haiti earthquake, various conspiracy theories related to the event have been advanced, some of which allege that the earthquake was man-made. Others merely argue that the United States has been using the earthquake as a pretext to launch a large-scale military occupation of Haiti. Finally, some allege that Israel may be engaging in organ harvesting in Haiti. |

Following the 2010 Haiti earthquake various conspiracy theories took form about the causes of the quake or the ensuing relief efforts. |

Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez himself claimed that the United States, which he referred to as "the gringos" was merely using the earthquake as an excuse to "invade and militarily occupy Haiti". Chavez also said that "The empire (the U.S.) is taking Haiti over the bodies and tears of its people." Chavez later accused the United States of causing the earthquake by "playing God" and using a "tectonic weapon". |

In the aftermath of the earthquake, Cuban President Fidel Castro claimed that the United States was using it as a pretext for a military "occupation", also claiming that "no one knows why ... thousands of (U.S. Marines) and paratroopers from the 82nd Airborne Division and other military forces have occupied Haitian territory." Similar sentiments were echoed by Bolivia's president Evo Morales and Nicaraguan leader Daniel Ortega. Morales even went so far as to urge the United Nations to condemn the United States' role in Haiti. |

The United States has rejected the allegations that it was "occupying" Haiti. Assistant Secretary of State for Western Hemisphere Affairs Arturo Valenzuela stated "Haiti is a sovereign country, everybody respects Haiti's sovereign country, the United States respects Haiti's sovereignty... We are there because the Haitians invited us ... and we have a moral obligation." Valenzuela described the Latin American criticism as "misguided", saying it "ignores the reality on the ground". |

Religious leader Pat Robertson claimed on his TV show, 700 Club, that the earthquake in Haiti was the result of the people of Haiti engaging in a secret pact with the Devil in order to liberate themselves from the French colonists, and subsequently receiving punishment from God. White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs dismissed Robertson's theory as "stupid". |

Revision as of 19:00, 12 February 2010
Following the 2010 Haiti earthquake various conspiracy theories took form about the causes of the quake or the ensuing relief efforts.
Fringe causation theories
"Caused by the US HAARP project"
Venezuelan state-run television station ViVe published an article on its website, claiming that reports from Russia's Northern Fleet alleged that the United States may have caused the Haitian earthquake by testing its controversial HAARP facility. ViVe also claimed that Russian report suggested that the HAARP testing caused the 2010 Eureka earthquake and may also have caused the 2008 China earthquake.[1][2][3] A translation of the ViVe article appeared on the Russian tabloid website pravda.ru.[4]
A fake video by Russia Today, composed of footage of Chavez shot on December 30th 2009 combined with the voice of a Russian journalist providing a false translation,[5] circulated on the Internet, giving rise to a rumor of Chavez accusing the United States of causing the earthquake by "playing God" by testing a "tectonic weapon".[6][7][8][9]
Conspiratorial relief effort theories
Accusations of organ harvesting by Israeli medical teams
In the immediate aftermath of the quake, Israel sent 120 staff, doctors and troops of the Israel Defense Forces to Port-au-Prince.[10][11] The IDF set up a field hospital which was widely praised as the first fully functional surgical unit on the ground.[12][13]
However on January 18th, an American activist, known only as T. West, posted a video on YouTube in which he called for Haitians to be wary of "personalities who are out for money" and of the Israeli Defense Forces in particular.[14][15][16] To explain his concern, West stated that "the IDF [had] participated in the past in stealing organ transplants [sic] of Palestinians and others", thus echoing claims that had, two months earlier, led to the Aftonbladet Israel controversy. West, who claimed to speak for a black-empowerment group called AfriSynergy Productions, stopped short of more explicit accusations against the IDF's behaviour in Haiti but noted that there was "little monitoring" in the quake's aftermath, insinuating that organ theft was at the very least a strong possibility. The Iranian state television Press TV reported on the allegations[17][15] and in a speech on January 22nd, Ayatollah Ahmad Khatami said "There have been news reports that the Zionist regime, in the case of the catastrophe of Haiti, and under the pretext of providing relief to the people of Haiti, is stealing the organs of these wretched people."[18], again citing no evidence. On January 27th, a Syrian TV reporter described T. West's video as "document[ing] this heinous crime and [...] show[ing] Israelis engaged in stealing organs from the earthquake victims" (despite the fact that the video quite evidently does no such thing).[19] The accusations were also relayed by a number of organizations often criticized for their antisemitism and anti-Israel positions, such as Hezbollah's television Al-Manar and the websites of Hizb ut-Tahrir, Al Jazeera and American politician David Duke.[20][15][17][21]
Israeli media and Jewish groups immediately fought back against the claims.[16][22] In an interview with Ynetnews, West re-iterated his accusation about past incidents of organ theft by the IDF and cited Operation Bid Rig as further evidence of Jewish involvement in organ trafficking.[16] The Anti-Defamation League responded, labeling West's allegations as antisemitic and as a "Big Lie", while an author for the Jewish Ledger referred to the rumors as a "blood libel".[22]
