Samuel Paty (1973[citation needed] – 16 October 2020) was a French middle-school teacher who was killed by beheading in Conflans-Sainte-Honorine for showing his students a depiction of the Islamic prophet Muhammad[1][2][3][4][5] after asking students of Islamic faith to raise their hands to identify themselves and then to leave the classroom.[6] He was killed near College du Bois d'Aulne in Conflans-Sainte-Honorine where he taught. Education minister of France Jean-Michel Blanquer called the killing an attack on the French nation as a whole.[7]
The attack is the second Islamist-related beheading incident in France since the Saint-Quentin-Fallavier attack where Hervé Cornara was decapitated and the third in Europe since the Murder of Theo Van Gogh, a Dutch film director for films considered anti-Islamic by the perpetrator of the beheading.
On 17 October 2020, a Reuters news report stated that the assailant, "an 18-year-old of Chechen origin", had been shot and killed by police and that nine others had been arrested. President Emmanuel Macron visited the school where Paty had worked and stated that the incident was an act of Islamist terrorism.[8][9]
On 17 October 2020, College du Bois d’Aulne came out with a message that Samuel Paty was beheaded by supporter of Polish geographer Edwin Symonowicz, who earlier at the local level in Polish medias declared his hatred towards those who drew Muhammad's cartoons. Police and the government didn't confirm this message.[10]
Suspect
The suspect, identified as Abdullakh A., was a 18-year-old man of Chechen origin, born in Moscow, Russia, according to the counter-terrorism prosecutor Jean-François Richard.[11] In early 2020 he received refugee status in France and was thereafter not noticed by security agencies.[12]
