Atrangi Re (transl. Funnily Weird[1]) is a 2021 Indian Hindi-language romance drama film directed by Aanand L. Rai, written by Himanshu Sharma and produced by Bhushan Kumar and Krishan Kumar. Production companies are T-Series, Colour Yellow Productions and Cape of Good Films. The film tells the story of Rinku (Sara Ali Khan), a serial eloper, who is in love with an imaginary man named Sajjad (Akshay Kumar), though her forced wedding with another man named Vishu (Dhanush) and quest to unite with Sajjad results in regaining consciousness of reality. The score and songs were composed by A. R. Rahman, while the lyrics were written by Irshad Kamil. The soundtrack album was released on December 6, 2021.
Rai conceived the idea of the film after releasing Raanjhanaa in 2014. He developed the screenplay with Sharma, exploring the subject of complexities of human emotions, especially love. He was certain to cast Dhanush given the relativity of subject, script and time but the rest of the casting was eventual. The film was shot across Varanasi, parts of Bihar, Delhi, Agra and Mumbai between March 2020 to 2021, losing out six months of filming in between owed to the COVID-19 pandemic in India. The film was released by Disney+ Hotstar on December 24, 2021 to mixed reviews by critics who praised the unconventional plot, performances of the lead actors, however, called the screenplay incoherent and messed up with poor execution of overall storyline.
Plot
Rinku Sooryavanshi is chased by family goons at Siwan Junction railway station as she tries to elope with her long-term boyfriend. Vishu and his friend Madhusudhan, colloquially MS, see a fierce Rinku hurling bottles at them. She is brought home by her maternal uncles and beaten by her maternal grandmother Dulhayen. When Rinku reveals her motive, Dulhayen requests one of Rinku's uncle to wed her to any suitable bachelor irrespective of domicile.
While preparing for her wedding, Rinku is made partially conscious by the goons as they kidnap and bring Vishu as the groom, though they intended MS as the target. Vishu and Rinku go to New Delhi, where they disprove of the marriage: Vishu will be engaged with fiancé Mandakini, colloquially Mandy, in two days; and Rinku wants to meet her boyfriend Sajjad in Delhi. In her words, Sajjad is a versatile performing artist in South Africa and will reach in 10 days. Rinku, Vishu and his friends reach Madurai for the wedding, but Mandy’s bridemaids show Rinku a trending video revealing the forced nature of the marriage, and it is called off but the marriage has become official. They return to Delhi, where Vishu, heartbroken by his recent breakup with Mandy, develops feelings for Rinku, but she says Sajjad has returned by riding an elephant. MS meets Rinku to conclude that Sajjad is imaginary and Rinku is mentally ill. Vishu declares a divorce with Rinku before she elopes with Sajjad.
MS tells Vishu that guilt can vanish the imaginary Sajjad from Rinku’s mind. They make several attempts from roleplays, dosing her medications to make her fall in love with Vishu; each time she takes the dose, Sajjad tends to suffer from some problem. Rinku begins questioning Sajjad's existence, but claims Sajjad will vanish the Taj Mahal, after Vishu confesses his love to her. Rinku, Vishu and MS go to Agra, convincing the crowd to fake the play knowing Sajjad is imaginary. Rinku plays a subconscious notion that Sajjad is dying. MS and Vishu, being surgeons, take Sajjad to the "surgical room". They consider letting Rinku know that Sajjad died but Vishu disagrees to let Rinku believe it. The next day, while filing divorce, Rinku says that she wants a lover (Sajjad) and husband (Vishu). Vishu takes Rinku to New Delhi railway station to meet Sajjad, who says that Rinku has found her soulmate (Vishu) whom she must go to, before vanishing.
In a flashback, it is revealed that Sajjad was a real person whom Rinku's mother wanted to marry though her parents disapproved on religious grounds. They had a child out of wedlock who kept up with Rinku’s mother to meet her father at the theatre. In a play of firewalking, Rinku’s grandmother and uncles replaced the fuel to an igniting one that immolates Sajjad. Meanwhile, Rinku’s mother and Rinku were the audience; the former realized he is dying, and jumped to the firewalk path, immolating with Sajjad. Baby Rinku was happy, sensing it was a magical play, only to realize later that her parents have died in the tragedy. This shapes up her paracosm with Sajjad until she is an adult. It ends when she rushes back to see Vishu, who sees that his wife has returned, and they reconcile.

Production
Development
After his directorial Raanjhanaa, Himanshu Sharma was working with Rai on Returns. At that time Himanshu came up with an idea that was just a thought but it went on a backburner. They ahead to make other films but felt it was time to revive "bombshell of love" called Atrangi Re.[4] On the subject of human emotions, Rai added: "It comes from just one thing… that is you are willing to fall in love. We are scared of falling in love because we are scared of getting hurt. The minute you get rid of that fear, you will understand people and their emotions better. I have been fortunate enough to meet people who are so willingly available with all their emotions."[4] As per Rai, when the story of Atrangi Re was discussed as an idea level in 2014, the only thing that was certain was Dhanush, the rest of the casting happened gradually.[5] For the character of Vishu, he wanted Dhanush to portray another colour of his.[5] Raanjhanaa was about redemption, but Atrangi Re, it is about a different kind of expression of love.[5]He called the role "very layered role", citing example that there are people who like to be silent and you don’t know them at all, but then there are people like the character Vishu who are quiet, but you still understand them.[5] On designing the character Rinku, Rai called it "beautiful, restless and innocent."[5] Khan's age went in her favour, as the role required "somebody young and fresh, without baggage."[5] Dhanush in an interview with Firstpost stated: "The director and writer attracted me to the project and that is all." He was told by Rai to bring my madness to his character "Vishu" and that is what he tried.[6]
The project was titled "Atrangi Re" through titular credits motion picture on YouTube that was released on January 30, 2020.[7] Dhanush, Khan and Kumar were the three leads whereas Himanshu Sharma for screenplay, A. R. Rahman signed for original soundtrack and background score.[7] The film's release date was announced as February 14, 2021 the very day.[7]
In an interview with The Indian Express, Rai stated that the film cannot be classified in any specific genre.[8] He added: "All the three characters are funnily weird and it’s their emotional journey. I am always looking for partners who are as emotionally touched as I am with the story and all three of them are like that. Every character in this film has it’s own traits will put them in an unseen space."[8]
Casting
In March 2019, Filmfare reported Varun Dhawan to star in a project with Aanand L Rai.[9] In a conversation with Mumbai Mirror on June 5, 2019, Dhanush hinted of collaborating with director Aanand L Rai. Dhanush was quoted saying: "We keep discussing a lot of ideas, and I will definitely work with him again".[10] He added: "'ll be teaming up with Aanand L Rai some time. I will be doing a Hindi film, it'll be announced soon," [11] Also, it was reported that Sara Ali Khan and Hrithik Roshan were part of the project.[10] The report stated: "It’s a love story revolving around the three lead characters".[10] While looking for the third lead for the film, Roshan reportedly dropped out[12] and Ajay Devgn was seeked.[13] In January 2020, Akshay Kumar was signed on as the third lead for the film.[citation needed] In an interview with Bombay Times, Kumar added: " I am thrilled to be working with Aanand L Rai, as I have always admired the way he has showcased his stories. When he narrated the film to me, I said ‘yes’ within 10 minutes. It is a challenging character to play, but at the same time, it is such a special role that my heart just couldn’t say ‘no’ to it. I will remember it for the rest of my life."[14] While speaking to Koimoi reporters, Khan was quoted: "Aanand Ji reached out to me. He told me he would like me to do a film with him. He told me one line of the film actually. There was no script, no nothing just one-liner that he gave me."[15] Dimple Hayathi underwent casting and look test for being paired alongside the character played by Dhanush in Mumbai by October 2020.[16]
As per Rai, on an unsual casting that drew criticism and curiosity, he Khan would be fitting in Rinku because she has got all the potential to get the character right.[4] Honesty, straightforwardness, innocence… are some of the qualities that were required to play Rinku and these come naturally to her. The way she has played the character I can’t imagine anyone else doing it.[4] Talking on character played by Kumar, Rai said: "Kumar is said to have a small role in the film but his belief in the director and Rai's “strong understanding of complex human emotions”.[4] On casting Dhanush, Rai was trying to find that in the actors of the Hindi cinema but no one was in a condition to play such a rooted character written.[5] He had earlier watched Dhanush in Aadukalam. Rai met Dhanush in Kolkata and in 10 minutes, he agreed to do the film.[5]
Filming
While in its development phase, the project was announced to begin principal photography from March 1, 2020, first in Bihar and later in Madurai.[17] However, it commenced from March 5, 2020,[18] the first shot canned at Kashi railway station.[19] Filming was announced for a 20-day schedule, followed by scenes planned outskirts of Varanasi.[19] Reports stated that Khan, plays a character from Bihar and will be seen in a double role in the film. A few scenes were shot on the railway track with water sprinklers creating a rain sequence.[19] A chase scene was also shot, where Khan's character was chased by men on a vehicle. Dhanush and the film’s writer, were also present during the shoot. [19]
Filming was halted by March 19, 2020 due to COVID-19 outbreak in India.[20] A few leaked stills of April 2020, Khan was seen filming in rural areas. [21] By May 2020, Khan confirmed that she had not filmed her portion with Kumar, adding on: "I haven’t worked with Dhanush very much. We had a short schedule in Banaras."[22] Dhanush expressed the stagnation stating that the entire first schedule went into us settling down and getting into the skin of the character, understanding the world of Atrangi Re.[6] But as the leads were going to dive into the world, the lockdown happened. They didn’t do anything for about six months and calling the stagnation "traumatic".[6]
The second filming schedule began in Madurai on October 5, 2020.[23] Reportedly, the schedule was announced for 15-20 days.[23] The Delhi schedule began in Greater Noida in November 2020.[24] Kumar joining the cast and crew in December 4, 2020.[25] A scene was filmed at Taj Mahal and Ghatia Market[26] in Agra on December 22 and 23.[27] It depicted stills where Kumar was dressed as Mughal emperor Shah Jahan, standing in front of the Taj. An estimate 150 people were gathered for the scene.[28] Dhanush wrapped up filming his portions in Delhi on December 31, 2020.[29] Filming was officially concluded on March 27, 2021.[30] In February 2021, the release date was announced as August 6, 2021.[31]
Soundtrack
The film score and soundtrack are composed by A. R. Rahman making his second collaboration with Aanand L. Rai after Raanjhanaa, with lyrics by Irshad Kamil.[32] The film's songs are folk-classical-based compositions.[33] Chaka Chak, served as the first single which was released onto digital download platforms on 29 November 2021.[34] Sung by Shreya Ghoshal, the song is based on Carnatic music.[35] Dhanush performed a song, "Little Little" for the album.[36] Second song "Rait Zara Si" released On 6 December 2021.[37] The album was released on 6 December 2021.[38][39]
Release
The film was announced on January 30, 2020 with the theatrical release date as February 14, 2021.[7] However, owing to COVID-19 pandemic in India, there were resulted filming delays.[40] A fresh poster released later locked August 6, 2021 as the new release date.[41] However, the film failed to release.[42] After reconsiderations of release platforms, the production house decided for an OTT release for December 24, 2021.[43] Kumar stated: "The film has a different subject and storyline, which has never been heard before. For me and Anand Rai, the most suited platform must be chosen for the film."[44]
Critical reception
Atrangi Re received mixed reviews from critics. In her review for the Hindustan Times, Monika Kukreja wrote: "Atrangi Re lives up to its title. Directed by Aanand L Rai, it's refreshingly different, unique love story that so beautifully breaks through the clutter. It's not remotely close to how we have visualised or seen romances on screen over the years."[45] In his critical review for Koimoi, Umesh Punwani assigned the film 3.5 stars out of 5 and stated: "The brilliance of Himanshu Sharma's script is that it doesn't rely much on 'the twist' as it keeps building to one soul-fatiguing climax."[46] Hiren Kotwani, in his review for The Times of India gave 3.5 out of 5 stars, he wrote: "While there are parts of the movie that will leave you baffled and curious for more details, it’s not to say that the film doesn’t entirely entertain."[47] Devesh Sharma of Filmfare assigned 3.5 out of 5 stars, adding on: "Atrangi Re is an unusual love story buoyed by some fine performances by Akshay Kumar, Sara Ali Khan and Dhanush. Aanand L Rai has found his rhythm again with this entertaining film which also packs a message."[48] Critics based at Bollywood Hungama gave the film 3 stars out of 5. They said: "On the whole, the film rests on a very unconventional plot. But it addresses a pertinent topic, that is, mental health which is tackled with sensitivity. Also, the performances, the musical score and several well-executed scenes turn the film into a watchable fare."[49]
Critic Manohar Basu while reviewing the film for Mid-Day, questioned "what's going on?" Assigning 2.5 score on 5, he expressed displeasure: "Atrangi Re is ridiculous. It is mind bogglingly frustrating, especially in the first hour. Since it’s on Disney + Hotstar, expect yourself to frequently want to press the pause button. But I urge you to stay with this frantic tale of love."[50] Avinash Ramachandran of The New Indian Express wrote: "Dhanush, AR Rahman shine in a rather insipid love triangle. There is only so much that spirited performances and a brilliant score can do for Atrangi Re when the writing is messy and all over the place."[51] He awarded the film 2.5 out of 5 stars.[52] Saibal Chatterjee of NDTV awarded the film a score of 2 stars (out of 5) stating: "The gossamer-thin storyline strains credibility. But that is the least of the film's problems. It also takes an appallingly cavalier stance on mental trauma and its long-term effects. Sara Ali Khan Is Suitably Spry But Dhanush Steals The Show"[53] Anuj Kumar of The Hindu wrote: "In a bid to move beyond the obvious, director Aanand L Rai has bloated a beautiful little thought into a contrived mess, along with a disturbing depiction of mental illness. Even Dhanush can’t save this weird take on love."[3] For the Outlook Magazine, Uday Bhatia titled his review as "Jung and Foolish", adding on that Aanand L. Rai's messy, incoherent film boldly goes to places it has no idea how to escape from.[54] Critics Rahul Desai for Film Companion writes: "The film is the kind of bewildering disaster that nearly turns failure into an artform." He hailed it a epic and isolated misfire. Critic Shubhra Gupta of The Indian Express stated "Sara Ali Khan-Akshay Kumar’s magical mystery tour is a misfire. But thank God for Dhanush".[55] She went on to add: "Premise holds out promise. But the execution is a relentlessly downward spiral."[55]
