The Petra László tripping incident was an incident that took place in Röszke, Hungary, on September 8, 2015, when Hungarian camerawoman Petra László was allegedly recorded tripping a Syrian migrant with his child, "as they broke away from police on Hungary's southern border with Serbia"[1], during the European migrant crisis.
Incident
The incident involved Hungarian camerawoman Petra László who was accused of tripping a Syrian man, Osama Abdul Mohsen, chased by policemen while carrying his son.[2]. She was recorded kicking a running teenage Syrian boy and girl.[1][3]
The incident was covered by several news outlets around the world[4][5][6][7][8] and László was fired from her job.[1][9][10][11]
László's employer, N1TV, also known as Nemzeti TV, which has close links to Jobbik, issued a statement following the incident, "An employee of N1TV today showed unacceptable behaviour at the Röszke collection point," N1TV said. "We have terminated the contract of the camera woman with immediate effect today."[1]
László later apologized for the incident on September 11, 2015.[12] She explained that following the migrants' mass outbreak, "I was scared. Then something snapped in me... I just thought that I was attacked and I have to protect myself." László added, "I’m not a heartless, racist children kicking camerawoman. I do not deserve it nor the political witch hunts against me, nor the smear, the many death threats."[13]
The investigation
In September 2016, Hungarian prosecutors have indicted László and charged her with breaching the peace.[14] László is charged with kicking a young man in the shin and an underage girl in the knee. According to the indictment, the investigation of the prosecutors confirmed that she did not trip Osama Mohsen; the most famous victim of the incident actually fell when he lost his balance after a policeman suddenly released his arm.[15]
Aftermath
On October 21, 2015, László later told a Russian newspaper that after her upcoming criminal trial in Hungary that stemmed from the incident she was considering moving to Russia.[16] László also told the same Russian paper she was planning to file two lawsuits when her trial is over, the first to sue the refugee, Osama Abdul Mohsen, for allegedly changing his testimony to police, and Facebook for allegedly refusing to remove threatening groups on their website.[16] László said, "(Mr. Mohsen) changed his testimony, because he initially blamed the police."[16] László also said "My husband wants to prove my innocence. For him, it is now a matter of honour."[16]
Osama Abdul Mohsen, a Syrian who had moved his family to Turkey for over a year before and was now trying to get to Germany during the incident later told CNN he did not buy László's apology and said, "I tell her, be sure you Hungarian journalist that karma will get back to you, and God will not leave this be."[2]
Mohsen, a professional soccer coach from the eastern province of Deir al-Zour,[17] later settled in Spain when he was offered a job by a Spanish sports organization.[18][19]
Unfounded rumors then appeared on social networks that Mohsen had expressed support for the Nusra Front, a Syrian rebel group linked to Al Qaeda that was designated a terrorist group by the United States in 2012.[17] The rumors appeared to be based on misinterpretations of two Facebook posts on Mohsen’s profile page: a September 13 photo of a black banner with a Muslim declaration of faith known as the Shahada, that says "There is no god but God, and Mohammad is his prophet;' and a status update from late in the year 2013 in which Mohsen expressed admiration for the Sunni Muslim rebels that were fighting the Assad government.[17] The image has since been removed from Facebook.[17] In a telephone interview, Mohsen claimed he never expressed support for the Nusra Front, but been part of peaceful demonstrations against the Assad government in 2011 and resigned from a position with the government’s sports federation before leaving Deir al-Zour two years ago when "the situation deteriorated."[17] Mohsen added, "I hate violence; that’s why I decided to leave Deir al-Zour," he said. "I never joined any faction."[17]
Later in November 2015, Mohsen declared that he wants to leave Spain and settle down in Austria or in Germany, to organize a football team, recruited from Syrian refugees.[20]
In December 2015, in an interview, Mohsen reported that even though he asked permission from prime minister Mariano Rajoy, the Spanish authorities refused his demand for family reunion, so his family must stay in Turkey.[21]
The Corriera della Sera states that Mr. Mohsen did nothing in the office, he was just starring at the monitor of his computer, and did not even take an effort to learn Spanish.[22] On 15 October 2016, the Spanish journal El Confidencial reported that the Escuela Nacional de Entrenadores de Fútbol (Cenafe) decided not to renew the contract of Mr. Mohsen, because he had "difficulties learning Spanish".[23]
