Daphnis et Alcimadure (in occitan classical norm : Dafnís e Alcimadure) is an opera with a libretto in occitan language composed by baroque violinist, director and composer Jean-Joseph Cassanéa de Mondonville (who wrote himself the libretto).
History, criticism and interpretation
It was stage for the firts time on october 24 1754 at Fontainebleau and performed for the king Louis XV of France and its court.
Daphnis et Alcimadure was immediatly criticized in the Mercure de France and then performed in many other cities (especially in the south of France where occitan was still widely used) and translated and imitated in french language.
Mondonville asked two very famous opera singers to perfome his work : the prima donna Marie Fel from Bordeaux and the prim'uomo Pierre Jélyotte from Béarn (both Bordeaux and Béarn are traditionally occitan speaking region, though of gascon and Béarnais dialects whereas Mondonville wrote in languedocien dialect).
It was composed during the Querelle des Bouffons, a historical argument agaisnt suporters of french and italian music. Mondonville was supposed to support the former. That is why german critic Melchior Grimm (a supporter of italian music) did not apreciated Mondonville's music though he approved the use of occitan language for being closer to italian language.
Mondonville's occitan opera was performed back in Montpellier in 1981 and a recorded ; in 1999 some pieces were recorded on CD with baroque musical instruments.
