Nominator's rationale: I don't think we usually distinguish between former and current countries in most categories. For example, we have "Soviet union" in a number of "by-country" categories. It's better just to merge these rather than maintain a separate tree here. Obi-Wan Kenobi (talk) 20:57, 14 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Nominator's rationale:Delete and re-upmerge. We do not generally categorise men who have held a post overwhelmingly held throughout history by men. See Wikipedia:Categorization/Ethnicity, gender, religion and sexuality#Gender, which specifically says we should not create a Category:Male heads of government, even though we have a Category:Female heads of government. Since one's gender is not relevant to being a mayor, we only categorise the minority (until relatively recently there were very few female mayors, and even now the vast majority are still male) and not the majority. These categories have only been created in the last few days and should be knocked on the head now before even more are created. In my opinion, it would take consensus in a major discussion on Wikipedia talk:Categorization/Ethnicity, gender, religion and sexuality or similar to mandate their creation. -- Necrothesp (talk) 15:28, 14 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah sorry, I didn't see that information until today. But it still seems counter-intuitive, as it really messes up the consistency of categorization. It really bugs me that wikipedia doesn't have a standard categorization system or hierarchy, but if the rules say there can't be a gender-specified subcategory if that gender is dominant in that category, then I guess the rules are the rules. --Iamozy (talk) 16:46, 14 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
merge to non-gendered parents, unless sources can be brought to demonstrate that "male mayors" is a topic of significant study and work. I found some references, but they were pretty sparse.--Obi-Wan Kenobi (talk) 23:02, 14 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Merge another ill-conceived by-gender classification that ghettoizes rather than makes WP useful. Carlossuarez46 (talk) 23:14, 15 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Selective upmerge, which will not be needed where the pages are already in a city sub-category of the non-gendered parent category. – FayenaticLondon 11:35, 16 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Selective upmerge, per Obi-Wan Kenobi's rationale about how this breaches WP:Cat gender, and FL's comments about how the articles may already be in more specific ungendered categories. --BrownHairedGirl(talk) • (contribs) 15:42, 17 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Merge (or rename) to the equivalent non-gendered category. Peterkingiron (talk) 21:19, 20 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Selective upmerge, no need for this category but selective merger is required since the category above may have some of the links already included. JTdaleTalk 02:01, 28 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Nominator's rationale:Rename. This was recently renamed at CFD March 12, against the guidance in Wikipedia:Category_names#Socio-cultural_topics. I supported the change in that CFD because I was of the opinion that the national members should be renamed from "nationality" to "country", e.g. "Society of Afghanistan" instead of Category:Afghan society. I therefore went on to propose a mass renaming of the sub-cats at CFD March 27. This was strongly rejected, on the grounds that the society categories have multiple members which cover the diasporas, especially "Afghan culture" but also e.g. "Afghan refugee camps" which are clearly outside the borders. The national sub-cats therefore stay named by nationality rather than country. Participants in the second CFD did not comment on my "Alternative", to rename the parent back to "by nationality", and the editor who closed it therefore ignored this. I asked him to review his decision, but he has not replied further. Therefore this CFD is required to reverse the first renaming, in order that the parent should match the contents. – FayenaticLondon 07:13, 14 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
rename per nom to match the subcategories and long standing practice in WP. And have a nationality category tree in place. 'Society by national origin' is just a terrible alternative. Hmains (talk) 03:38, 15 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the discussion was:delete; listify first. Good Ol’factory(talk) 23:47, 15 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: This is categorizing articles based on a characteristic of the article title, not on a characteristic of the article subject. E.g. if the Dodo article was renamed to Raphus cucullatus then (presumably) it would no longer belong in this category. This may be a good candidate for listification. DexDor (talk) 06:31, 14 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Delete overcat on shared name characteristic. Carlossuarez46 (talk) 23:16, 15 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Listify and delete. WP:OC#SHAREDNAMES. Animal noises already have a list; others could be compactly listed in a few lines, thematically, in the main article. – FayenaticLondon 09:03, 16 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Delete Wikipedia is not a dictionary, we categorize by what an article covers, not what it is named.John Pack Lambert (talk) 01:56, 23 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Listify and delete. This is exactly the sort of thing that is perfect for a list, but a rubbish category. - The BushrangerOne ping only 02:34, 24 April 2014 (UTC)----[reply]
