The result of the discussion was:merge/rename per FL's revised proposal. The BushrangerOne ping only 01:28, 16 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: There are two overlapping categorisations schemes used here (Category:Royal residences and Category:Palaces) because "not all palaces are royal residences", but that is not the case in Thailand. All the members of these categories are royal residences, and all may be colloquially referred to as palaces (in specific contexts palaces may refer to only a subset of royal residences, though this use is technical and uncommon). Restructure, moving all the articles into Category:Royal residences in Thailand and making it a sub-category of "Palaces". Keep both categories because they are each part of head categories by country. – FayenaticLondon 22:10, 20 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not aware of any guideline that would decide this, so it is largely a matter of taste. I don't think Category:Palaces and royal residences in Thailand would convey that all the members are both Palaces and Royal residences. The advantage of both your suggestions over mine is that the existence of two categories means in practice that editors are likely to put pages into both, which is unnecessary in this case. – FayenaticLondon
Changing my opinion to merge and rename as nominated, but keep the existing categories as category redirects to the merge/rename targets, because editors are likely to be puzzled otherwise. Make Category:Royal residences in Thailand a member of Category:Palaces by country as well, and add an explanatory note along the lines stated in the nomination; add this on the redirect pages too. – FayenaticLondon 16:40, 22 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
