Eugene E. Stanaland is the current treasurer and director at the Alabama Shakespeare Festival, a board member of Huntingdon College, former Auburn, Alabama city council president, and former public speaker.
Early life and education
Stanaland graduated from Huntingdon College in 1960.[1] He received his MBA and Ph.D from the University of Alabama.[2][3] He was honored with the Alumni Loyalty Award for Huntingdon in 2002.[4]
Career
Stanaland served as a Marine Corps Sergeant.[5]
He was president of the city council in Auburn after being elected in 1972.[6] As a council president, he advocated for a 9-man city council and cooperation among officials.[7] He ran again, but lost in his bid for re-election in 1976.[8]
At the same time that he was president of the city council, he was also chair of the Auburn University Senate.[9]
He served as a professor of economics at Auburn University for over 20 years, as well as the head of the economics department from 1972 to 1980[10] and the geography department[11] before becoming a public speaker.[12] In public speaking, he was commonly known as the "Will Rogers of Economics."[13] He spoke in several places throughout the career, including at Auburn University,[14] Brooks International,[15] and RAB2003.[16] He would also found Gene Stanaland Enterprises, LLC, an economics and management consulting firm.[17][18][19]
Stanaland has served on the Huntingdon College board of trustees since 1991. As of 2024, he serves on the Emeriti Board.[1] In 2019, he was commemorated with the naming of the Phyllis and Eugene Stanaland Building, which was later shortened to the Phyllis and Gene Stanaland House.[20][21]
Currently, he also serves as treasurer at the Alabama Shakespeare Festival.[22][23] He is also Senior Vice Commandant for the Auburn Marines.[24]
Personal life
Stanaland is married to Phyllis Stanaland. He will be honored with the Distinguished Veteran Award on 27 May 2024.[5][25][26]
