To be, or not to be: that is the question:
Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer
The slings and arrows of outrageous fortune,
Or to take arms against a sea of troubles,
And by opposing end them? To die: to sleep;
No more; and by a sleep to say we end
The heart-ache and the thousand natural shocks
That flesh is heir to, 'tis a consummation
Devoutly to be wish'd. To die, to sleep;
To sleep: perchance to dream: ay, there's the rub;
For in that sleep of death what dreams may come
When we have shuffled off this mortal coil,
I wish I had a clever quote
~~~
Must give us pause: there's the respect
That makes calamity of so long life;
For who would bear the whips and scorns of time,
The oppressor's wrong, the proud man's contumely,
The pangs of despised love, the law's delay,
The insolence of office and the spurns
That patient merit of the unworthy takes,
When he himself might his quietus make
With a bare bodkin? who would fardels bear,
To grunt and sweat under a weary life,
But that the dread of something after death,
The undiscover'd country from whose bourn
No traveller returns, puzzles the will
And makes us rather bear those ills we have
Than fly to others that we know not of?
Thus conscience does make cowards of us all;
And thus the native hue of resolution
Is sicklied o'er with the pale cast of thought,
And enterprises of great pith and moment
With this regard their currents turn awry,
And lose the name of action. - Soft you now!
The fair Ophelia! Nymph, in thy orisons
Be all my sins remember'd.
- I so totally just wrote that out of my head. Really.
JanaEbb (talk) 20:06, 11 September 2010 (UTC)
- So this is how you indent slightly.
- By the way...great quotation, but I prefer...
'Twas brillig and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimbal in the wabe
All mimsy were the borogroves
And the mome raths outgrabe...
- Much more to learn about editing wiki pages though...
An Interpretation of Gwendolyn Brooks' Poem "We Real Cool" Pertaining to the Youth of Today
Gwendolyn Brooks expertly depicts the nature of the internal and external workings of the youth of her day in her poem "We Real Cool", capturing the general public's view on the growing youth, the views and feelings of the youth themselves, and adding her own insight as one who understood that the combined views of others and the youth themselves was unhealthy, less than accurate, and in dire need of change. She writes based on her sighting of some young students shooting pool in a bar during school hours:
"We Real Cool" by Gwendolyn Brooks
We real cool. We Left school. We Lurk late. We Strike straight. We Sing sin. We Thin gin. We Jazz June. We Die Soon."
Indeed even today, the word "teen" has slowly evolved into a label that depreciates the potential of our young and fully operable men and women within the years of 13 and 19. It has catered to a stereotype that older adults have come to understand as truth, and based on that stereotype, has given the youth themselves a shoddy sense of identity based on low expectations from others, dismissal of their potential to live above the given standards, and view that their teen years are just a time to enjoy leisure, and have no responsibility as citizens. The social clock has been set wrong, as these young men and women have been given the idea that they don't need to start "living" until they reach the age of 18 or 19 or sometimes even later. The fact that the teen years can be an internally an externally excruciating time of struggling to achieve identity, form friendships, and be comfortable as changes occur has been undermined by parents and teens alike. Many youth struggle to find who they themselves are, and strive for closure in that area by forming cliques, judging others, comparing themselves as if that would give them a better understanding of who they are and who they are not physically and emotionally. It's a difficult time, calling for change, more parental involvement, encouragement, and fellowship, but sadly, many teens have settled for less. The situation might be summed up in words similar to those within the lines of "We Real Cool", but based on the youth of this generation during this time, the words might go more like this:
"We Walk Tall"
We walk tall. We Judge all. We Dress same. We Loathe shame. We Speak strong. We Think wrong. We Stare blind. We Don't mind.
Ironically, the uncaring facade the youth are seen to be carrying is much deeper, and the longer it takes for others to see that, the more damage will be done, and the more shallow the identity of our youth will become. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Tasosin (talk • contribs) 19:32, 4 December 2010 (UTC)
Playing in the Sandbox
Sandbox Discussions
- The sandbox is a natural place to discuss the goings-on of the world. It's comfortable for social gatherings because of the following:
- it's a welcoming environment
- no clocks - no time restraints
- provides entertainment
- usually involves sweet toys
- if you don't like the company, it's not rude to leave
Replying to talk pages
So I noticed that this section saysː
- "You can reply in either of two ways. One is to put a message on the user talk page of the person you are replying to. The other is to put your reply on your own talk page beneath the original message. Both are common on Wikipedia; however, be aware that replying on your own talk page runs the risk that your reply won't be seen, if the user does not look at your talk page again. If you intend to use this approach, it is a good idea to post a notice to that effect, at the top of your talk page, so people know they have to keep an eye on the page to see your response, rather than getting your response on their page."
As a newbie here, I was actually wondering if there was a trend to make one way or the other the standard. I was also wondering if using the first way (putting the message on the user talk page of the person you are replying to) is easier since the other user does not need to constantly watch your own user talk page, and then just adding/quoting the message you are replying to as a reminder.
Also, unrelated but I also wanted to know if using the IPA colon (either from Special characters or switching from the Insert down-arrow) is the proper way to add a colon? I'm kind of unsure of how to add symbols that Wikitext already uses, such as apostrophes and colons. With the programming languages I am familiar with, I would just use a backslash/escape character (\) to perform the function I want it to. Iamany (talk) 10:00, 29 December 2010 (UTC)
Greetings!
Surprisingly enough, this is required for my college English class. I like it because:
- I like Wikipedia, and this teaches me how to "give back" other than just money
- I hate writing papers. This gives variety.
- I really hate writing all kinds of papers.
- Also, it's the wave of the future!
First Martin Luther King, Jr. Parade in America
Please be advised that a Houston based non-profit 501 c 3 organization, The Black Heritage Society, Inc. in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. conducted the very first Martin Luther King, Jr. Parade in Houston, Texas, January 15, 1978. Martin Luther "Daddy" King, Sr. served as the parade first grand marshal. Dr. King's father Daddy King also took part in the ribbon cutting ceremony naming and changing the street "South Park Boulevard" to "Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard." The information is well documented via film footage of the first MLK Parade along with Daddy King dating the event and speaking to the same. Sly Brown--Rsvp4u (talk) 21:57, 31 January 2011 (UTC)
Nice Work, You've made it this far
Someone once mentioned the editing interface of wikipedia is not accessible to larger audiences
- I don't think that is necessarily true
- It just takes initiative to learn something new that might resemble html.
- or maybe not html, but it's kind of like old school LJ code we all learned to post jump cuts
- ok that was just html. whatever. the point is. this isn't so bad.
- it's fairly simple
- they have a cool Extremely Helpful Guide for Markup
- i used wikipedia to help me pass college I should be able to edit it
MR. FANCY PANTS
chances are your pants are not as fancy as the pair Of very fancy pants that Mr. Fancy Pants will wear When everybody’s marching in the fancy pants parade He’s gonna pass the test He’s gonna be the best The best in terms of pants
You look in every catalog you shop at every store Cause even though you have a hundred pants you want some more When suddenly you see the greatest pants you’ve ever seen And even though you know It’s gonna cost a lot of dough You have to have the world’s best pants
Say a little prayer for Mr. Fancy Pants The whole world knows They’re only clothes And deep inside He’s sad
They make the big announcement and the trophy goes to you You thought you had some fancy pants and now you know it’s true You look at Mr. Fancy Pants and hold the trophy high Everybody cheers While he’s blinking back the tears He doesn’t even have the best pants
Say a little prayer for Mr. Fancy Pants It’s all he had But don’t feel bad He’d do the same To you Andrewmangan00 (talk) 01:40, 18 March 2011 (UTC)
