The 12 basic principles of animation is a set of principles introduced by the Disney animators Ollie Johnston and Frank Thomas, in their book The Illusion of Life: Disney Animation. The principles are as follows:
- Squash and stretch
- Anticipation
- Staging
- Straight Ahead Action and Pose to Pose
- Follow Through and Overlapping Action
- Slow In and Slow Out
- Arcs
- Secondary Action
- Timing
- Exaggeration
- Solid Drawing
- Appeal
