The Can-Am Spyder roadster is a brand new vehicle made by Bombardier Recreational Products that was released in 2007. Similar in layout to a modern snowmobile, the Spyder uses an ATV-like chassis with a single rear drive wheel, and two wheels in front for steering. The main feature of the vehicle is a stability system or VSS that monitors the vehicle at all time and intervenes in case one of the front wheels lifts of the ground (It cuts the engine and applies the brake on the outer wheel)
The project was managed by three different Engineers from Bombardier Recreationnal Products each with a different background:
- From 2002 up Until 2004: Daniel Duceppe, Sea-Doo Project Manager for the initial prototypes
- From 2004 to 2006: Charles Bombardier, Ski-Doo, Project Manager, final concept, Board Approval and Tooling Release
- From 2006 to production: Vincent Morin, ATV Project Manager production implementation and follow-up
A team of more than 30 engineers, technicians, designers, mechanics and buyers worked full time in Valcourt, Quebec to realise this project, this combination of expertise helped create the Spyder as it is known today.
Features
The motorcycle-like price and performance of the Spyder is combined with a significant set of safety features, such as traction and stability control, antilock brakes, and the stability of a three-wheel layout. In most US states the Spyder is licensed as a motorcycle, though it is much easier to achieve proficiency and confidence with the Spyder than with a motorcycle. The Spyder also comes with additional convenience features such as simplified braking (front and rear brakes are both actuated by the same foot pedal), a true reverse gear, power steering, power assisted clutch, and an optional electronic automatic transmission.[1][2]
