martin degville date of birth not as published it is 27.01.1958 his facebook page evan says this — Preceding unsigned comment added by 94.171.123.233 (talk) 00:29, 18 January 2013 (UTC)
- That date is referenced to what appears to be a reliable source, though I haven't got the book to check. Facebook is not a reliable source (to be frank, it is not unknown for people to "massage" their ages - though this would not appear to be the usual direction). If you can find a reliable source, independent of Degville or his publishers and agents, for the 1958 date, you could add it to the article with that reference; but you should probably not remove the 1961 date unless there is an overwhelming preponderance of sources that say 1958. In that case you should discuss it on the article's talk page. --ColinFine (talk) 09:30, 18 January 2013 (UTC)
- The article says 28 November 1961. http://www.dellam.com/english/SP/SPUTNIKWORLD%20LIMITED.html says 27 January 1958. I also found sources saying 27 January 1961. I don't know what is right. Can you give a Facebook link with the date? PrimeHunter (talk) 20:56, 18 January 2013 (UTC)

It's pathetic that you're instrumental in the deletion of Sheikh Imran Nazar Hosein's wikipedia page. I'd like an explanation as to why that page was taken down. Was it an order from Tel-Aviv? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.190.8.70 (talk) 00:59, 18 January 2013 (UTC)
User:RiseOfMann/Nick Savoy
I have created a draft for Nick Savoy, one of the leaders in the field of seduction. I am requesting guidance in properly citing references to this article since I am new to the editing scene. From my research there were prior articles written about Nick Savoy that were deleted for advertising and not having proper sources; thus I am trying to avoid this. I am in no way affiliated with Nick Savoy, just believe he is worthy of an article due to his popularity and relevance to modern culture.
Any help is greatly appreciated!

Creating account
I noticed in the Swonder Ice Arena (Evansville,IN) page, it says the place is home to the Rollergirls of Southern Indiana. This league doesn't exist anymore. When I went to edit, it prompted me to sign in...I needed to create an account but the page to create an account only had the option of "log-in issues"...or something along those lines. I need to log-in to get rid of that dated information. Please and Thanks — Preceding unsigned comment added by 99.76.194.165 (talk) 14:56, 18 January 2013 (UTC)
- I don't see any reason why you cannot edit Swonder Ice Arena from an IP. In order to edit the first section, you need to pick the 'Edit' tab from the top of the page. Thank you for improving the article: if you wanted to do more to improve it, it is badly in need of some references: as it is, a reader has no way of knowing whether information in the article is reliable, or whether it is out of date, or mistaken, or the result of vandalism. --ColinFine (talk) 16:47, 18 January 2013 (UTC)
- IP's see MediaWiki:Anoneditwarning which since November has been more aggressive in encouraging login. It includes "Please log in or sign up". Maybe the poster thought it was required. Use the "sign up" link to create an account. PrimeHunter (talk) 20:24, 18 January 2013 (UTC)
Why was my page deleted.
My page, Matty Staudt, was deleted and it seems it was a speedy delete by the foundation. I work in media and it is importan that I have my page up. Can this be remedied? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.239.199.2 (talk) 20:19, 18 January 2013 (UTC)
- It wasn't deleted by the Foundation, it was deleted by a volunteer editor, after another volunteer editor proposed it for deletion under the WP:PROD process. The reason for the proposal was that you do not appear to pass WP:GNG.
- Just incidentally, it wasn't "your" page; it was a page about you. --Demiurge1000 (talk) 20:39, 18 January 2013 (UTC)
- (edit conflict) It wasn't speedy and it wasn't by the foundation but by a volunteer editor with high user rights. Matty Staudt was nominated for deletion per Wikipedia:Proposed deletion with argument "Not notable." See Wikipedia:Notability (people). The article was unsourced, nobody objected to deletion and after a week it was deleted. Even though the page may have been about you, it is not your page. We are an encyclopedia and our articles have to satisfy our criteria. It is not a factor that the subject wants to have a biography (although it can be a factor if they want it to be deleted). However, anybody can go to Wikipedia:Requests for undeletion and request undeletion of an article deleted per Wikipedia:Proposed deletion. It may then be nominated for deletion under another process. PrimeHunter (talk) 20:43, 18 January 2013 (UTC)
- What is important to you is not necessarily what is important to Wikipedia. promotion of any kind is forbidden in Wikipedia. That is why the criterion of notability is applied: only topics which have already been written about in reliable organs may have articles in Wikipedia. --ColinFine (talk) 21:51, 18 January 2013 (UTC)
- There are other places for you to create a bio such as WikiBios (unrelated to Wikipedia).--ukexpat (talk) 21:54, 18 January 2013 (UTC)
- There is US State News September 27, 2006 and Mobile Internet October 1, 2009. There may be other source material. Given that 70.239.199.2 is contesting the prod and this new source information, perhaps we can send the article to AfD. -- Uzma Gamal (talk) 14:07, 19 January 2013 (UTC)
- While the general rule is that anyone can context a prod, given that the only objection is the subject, who shouldn't be directly contributing anyway, I think it would be a process waste to restore it only to inevitably delete at AfD.--SPhilbrick(Talk) 14:56, 19 January 2013 (UTC)

- It was also asked at Wikipedia:Village pump (technical)/Archive 107#Why this article is viewed so much? with the below reply. PrimeHunter (talk) 20:47, 18 January 2013 (UTC)
- Normally these peaks are the result of a mistake in some code someone's made that ends up requesting the page over and over again. Given the subject matter I think that's likely in this case. Grandiose (me, talk, contribs) 14:55, 7 January 2013 (UTC)

Not only I'm going to rate your app as not useful and very bad, I'm also going to spread the word that you are politically inclined and are doing someone's (in my case putins) dirty job of convincing or confusing world to believe in his geopolitical ambitions. There is no "republic of abkhazia" on planet earth! There is region called Abkhazeti in Georgia and there is region Samachablo in Georgia. Just because they are occupied by putinist Russia it does not change what is recognized by civilized world to be reality! Regretfully Alla Wagner — Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.144.196.245 (talk) 21:12, 18 January 2013 (UTC)
- If you refer to our article Abkhazia then it says "The Georgian government and the majority of the world's governments consider Abkhazia a part of Georgia's territory." But it also mentions a few countries which recognize it as the Republic of Abkhazia. Whether you agree with the recognition or not, Wikipedia shouldn't hide the fact that some countries recognise it. See also International recognition of Abkhazia and South Ossetia which says "Georgia and the vast majority of other countries of the world do not recognise their independence and officially consider them as sovereign territory of the Georgian state". Is this original research?
I am unsure whether a decision that I made while working on the article Mike Disa would be considered original research or not. In one reference, Disa mentions that he had developed a film called Wings at Warner Bros. years earlier, but that the film was never produced. He does not give a specific time period for this. Another reference mentions that he developed a film at Warner Bros, but does not specify the name of the project. It does give some frame of reference for when he developed the film though. Although Disa worked as an animator on Looney Tunes: Back in Action at Warner Bros, this is the only film in his resume that has any ties to the studio, and working as an animator is very different from actually developing a project. Thus, it seems clear to me that the unnamed film mentioned in the second source is almost definately Wings. I chose to incorporate the chronology from the second reference in the article and used both references. I feel that this should be okay, but am a little worried that it might be considered original research.
Here are the two references
http://www.ctnanimationexpo.com/mike-disa/
--Jpcase (talk) 06:25, 19 January 2013 (UTC)
- To me that does sound like OR. However, I don't know if the following is considered a proper WP source, but...
- According to Linkedin:[1]
- Writer/Director Wings — Warner Feature
- 2004 – 2004 (less than a year) — Wrote script and Co-directed development for unproduced Warner Brothers feature film titled "Wings"
- ~E:74.60.29.141 (talk) 07:25, 19 January 2013 (UTC)
- It seems that linkedin.com is considered a self published source and would be considered an acceptable reference as long as there is no reasonable doubt as to its authenticity and the article does not heavily rely on self-published sources. The article only has one other self-published source (not by Disa himself, but from the official website of another filmmaker) and contains fourteen sources from reliable, third party sources, so this should not be a problem. I see no reason to doubt the authenticity of his linkedin account, especially since the 2004 time frame is consistent with the time frame found in the source that I mentioned (I have even found another source dated to 2004 that mentions Disa was currently developing a project at Warner Bros. at the time - http://www.animatedbuzz.com/WB/52.html).
- The only problem is that when I go to the linkedin page, I can't actually see his resume. There is a white box at the top, with his name, picture, occupation, location, the college that he went to, and a list of previous places that he has worked at (Starz Media, The Weinstein Company, California Institue of the Arts), but below that is a blue box saying "Full profiles for 3rd-degree connections are available only to premium account holders." When I google "Mike Disa Wings" though, the linkedin result does show information on Wings. Do you have a premium account then?
Browser emulator
Is there something like a browser emulator which can show what a WP page would look like on various browsers? ~E:74.60.29.141 (talk) 07:29, 19 January 2013 (UTC)
- It depends on which browser you are using. Some browsers allow you to change the user agent, which can give you a basic idea of what a page looks like. The Anonymouse (talk | contribs) 07:32, 19 January 2013 (UTC)
- Changing the User-Agent header will change the browser that the site thinks you are running, and therefore possibly the content it sends back to the browser, but it doesn't change how the browser interprets/renders it. Depending on the page, telling a site you are using IE when actually using Firefox could produce a page that looks nothing like it should in either. —[AlanM1(talk)]— 10:09, 19 January 2013 (UTC)

- This is a Wikimedia Foundation issue, an office action. That is, us ordinary editors, and by that I mean, users, administrators, oversighters, bureaucrats, etc.—all of us who aren't among the Foundation's handful of employees—can do nothing (well, I have the technical ability to unlock the article, and if I did do I would [rightly so] be desysopped in about five minutes). There is a legal issue that is pending. We are not here to second guess the Foundation's counsel and don't know the pertinent facts or issues involved. I suggest you drop this. the fact that there are "more than enough open source new articles than be used for this article" is immaterial to the issue.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 12:22, 19 January 2013 (UTC)

Double A-Side singles
Should Double A-Side singles be two separate articles or one articles, and should they be listed with one or two placings in an artist's singles chart. The one in question is "Break My Heart (You Really) / Heroine" by Shakespears Sister. Thanks for the input. The issue might be resolved in terms of the page as the website owner has taken down the reference to their website, but they've left a note in its place saying it's because of defamatory comments on the talk page. This stems from the fact that they were claiming a community run charity website was also technically a business, and I asked them how they could justify lying about it. I realise using the word 'lying' was a bad idea, especially because they have threatened me with legal action. I really wish I'd phrased it differently.--Jcvamp (talk) 18:52, 19 January 2013 (UTC)

Copyright Question
Hello, a quick copyright question from a Campus Ambassador. One of the students in a course I'm working with had s question about using a study's data on Wikipedia. Her question and my response are below, and I was wondering if my reasoning would be correct.
- Question: "... I want to copy and paste some tables into my group's Wikipedia page, and I need to know how I can figure out whether the pasting of tables from online journals is permissible by the journals I am using as sources and whether it is what Wikipedia calls 'Fair Use.'"
- My Response: "... As for the data, it depends a lot on whether the information is in the public domain (essentially, whether or not someone could access the information for free). If that's the case with this journal, I'd say you'd be all set to include it, provided of course that you cite your source. With data, unlike with text, there's no way to express the same idea with different words, so the copyright rules wouldn't be the same. My reasoning is based both on personal experience and the 10 guidelines here. The most relevant ones for you would be to (1) use the bare minimum of data necessary for the reader's understanding, and (2) to ensure that the data corresponds directly with an important section of the text. ..."
Would that be correct? If not, what would be? Thanks, Kithira (talk) 00:37, 20 January 2013 (UTC)
- I don't agree with the implied definition of public domain. Most online journals are not free to copy, even if they are free to access. I agree with your point that text can typically be rewritten with different words, which is why fair use of text is rare. I'd be cautious with data. While I take you point that you can't rewrite it like you can with text, a particular format of a table may be viewed as creative. This is a closer call, but as usual moonriddengirl is the expert. She has done a lot of work with copyright issue regarding lists, which are close to your example of data, but tabular data may well be a more complicated issue than a simple list.
- I'm responding abstractly, and it may be easier to respond with an actual answer. Another question that arises is why does one chose to include a table of data? Lists of items are understandable, but a table of state might open up other questions, Obviously, we have to steer clear of WP:OR, which shouldn't be a problem if the sources conclusions are used an properly attributed, but one wonders why the data is necessary, as opposed to simply the conclusions.--SPhilbrick(Talk) 00:59, 20 January 2013 (UTC)
- You should ask at WP:CQ. That's where the copyright-knowable folks hang out. You might need to provide more details such as the name of the Journal and how much from the article you are planning to use. RudolfRed (talk) 01:04, 20 January 2013 (UTC)
- Like Sphilbrick said, while data itself is not copyrightable, use of data can be creative so I would think it would depend on whether the ordering of the data met a threshold of originality, which would require seeing the particular use in order to come to an assessment. Disagree though that fair use of text is rare—it's actually ubiquitous—but comes up in a way that is not talked about often, so it may not be evident that fair use is at play. Specifically, all quotations on Wikipedia (of copyrighted material) are instances of fair use. That is why very long quotes are not allowed, because they go beyond what would be considered fair use of the material (the percentage of use in relation to the size of the original work is also a factor).--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 05:22, 20 January 2013 (UTC)
- I stand corrected on the fair use of text. What I meant, and I think is accurate, that while use of images under fair use requires a formal Wikipedia:FUR, I don't recall seeing one used for text. We do allow quoted text, when identified properly, but I don't ever recall seeing a rationale filed for the use of text.--SPhilbrick(Talk) 22:56, 20 January 2013 (UTC)

Would appreciate advice on contentious situation where I'm not sure where to (or if I should) report or ask for assistance on it.
Hi, I am involved in an AFD that has escalated into unpleasantness, both in the AFD and on the talk page for the article that is nominated for deletion. I'm not sure it is appropriate for me to take this to WP:Dispute resolution but I really feel at a loss. The issues are beyond my ken, and although I have tried to keep things neutral on the AFD nomination discussion, I now feel way out of my depth. I would really appreciate knowing that other, uninvolved people have looked at the situation, as I think I've ended up caught up in something beyond my understanding. I'm not even sure I should be bringing this here... so apologies if I've done wrong, I kept looking for somewhere to get help with no joy, so have come here as a last resort after considering dispute resolution several times over last couple days. Thank you for your advice and help. The AFD in question is Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Araksi Cetinyan Mabalu (talk) 04:14, 20 January 2013 (UTC)
- My suggestion is to disengage entirely. If you find you are becoming emotionally involved, or getting into repetitive back-and-forth disputes with the same people, it is best just to disengage. Anything important that needs to be said can be said fairly briefly and only needs to be said once, if you find you are fighting with someone, it's past the time to just go do something else for a while. Wikipedia has lots of places that need work, and if one article is giving you lots of trouble, let it calm down a bit and go do something else. --Jayron32 04:44, 20 January 2013 (UTC)
- Thanks! I'm already trying to step back from it, but others don't appear to be, and I feel like I ought to at least be keeping an eye on the madness. Just wondered if there's anywhere where you can request someone else to take a moderating/uninvolved eye without it having to be a report. Mabalu (talk) 11:29, 20 January 2013 (UTC)
What to do with a spam link that has already been reviewed but not deleted?
Hi, I don't know what to do with a spam link I removed in a page.
User:Cartoonistarif put spam links in several pages (as you can see in his talk page), including The Mag. Nobody removed it, even though it has no relevance to the subject. I kept the link when I cleaned up the links section of The Mag, but upon looking at his talk page I saw the problems... a fan magazine of Newcastle United has nothing to do with an online cartoon magazine in Bangladesh. Film Festival Wiki - deleted.
Hello,
If anyone can offer advice here, we will be most grateful.
Recently we discovered that the wiki we made about the Saint Petersburg International Film Festival (SPIFF) had been deleted. Before it disappeared completely I managed to read a message on it from a wiki editor. As I remember, it said there were insufficient sources.
Unfortunately we didn't know how to fix this and subsequently the wiki was deleted.
We would be very grateful if anyone could send us some guidelines the help us avoid this in future. Also, if it is possible for the wiki to be reinstated, instructions on how to achieve this would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you for your time, I have you are able to help.
Best regards,

Moving a category
I've just discovered a category with a typo in the title - Category:World record holders in paralympic athletics should be Category:World record holders in Paralympic athletics because the adjective "Paralympic" is derived from a proper noun. There is no move link on the category page so how is it suposed to be done? Roger (talk) 08:12, 20 January 2013 (UTC)
- According to the advice given here, categories cannot be moved. You have to edit all the articles you want to have placed in the new category. Maybe a tool such as AWB can do it, I am not sure. Otherwise I'd ask at WP:BOTREQ. -- Toshio Yamaguchi 08:39, 20 January 2013 (UTC)
- Uhm, I should actually read the stuff I point others to =). You can list a category you want to be renamed at Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Speedy (see the advice on that page). -- Toshio Yamaguchi 08:42, 20 January 2013 (UTC)

If I incorrectly nominated an article at AfD because of some confusion on my part, what can I do? - Thank you. I closed the AfD and removed the AfD tag from the article. -- Toshio Yamaguchi 12:12, 20 January 2013 (UTC)

- (edit conflict) Welcome. The easiest thing to do is to go to the page Wikipedia:Articles for creation, click on Create an article now! and follow the steps provided there. I recommend you take the time to carefully read the information provided there. As someone representing the organization about which you want to create an article, you have a conflict of interest, so I highly recommend you read the page Wikipedia:Plain and simple conflict of interest guide before you start. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask here. You can always ask a new question in this section by clicking the [Edit] link to the right of the Adding an entry heading. Simply put new comments at the bottom of this section. If you reply to someones elses post, please indent your replies by putting one more colon : in front of it, than the previous comment has like this:

- The only thing I would add is that articles are expected only for subjects which meet the wikipedia notability guidelines. Woodperry House, Oxfordshire
Woodperry House was bought by myself, Farzaneh Pirouz, and Kaveh Moussavi in 1995. I renovated the house keeping its character in tact. When the Youngs bought it from us it was already completely refurbished. I studied the period and especially focused on the original features. AOL Web Proxy
Not sure where I should ask this, here, AN(I) or VP(T)

This talk page states at the top:-

How to describe the use of a file as minimal?
I want to upload an image of a company's logo, but do not have much familiarity with uploading images. I am asked to describe how the image's use will be minimal. The form explains that this means not using more files in the article than are necessary, but it also says that the image must not be larger or of a higher resolution than is necessary. What is "larger than necessary" or "of a higher resolution than necessary"? How do I know if the image that I want to upload meets this criteria? If it doesn't, is there a way that I can change the image's size or lower its resolution? --Jpcase (talk) 16:19, 20 January 2013 (UTC)
- I think the rule of thumb is 300px wide maximum. Logos go in the infobox at the top and the recommended size is 300px wide. You can scale them in GIMP or similar software. In gimp use the image menu, scale image, set to pixels, and then set width to 300 and the height should adjust with it if you don't break the little chain link between the two. Some logos are ineligable for copyright because they aren't artistic enough so you may be able to upload it to commons.--Canoe1967 (talk) 16:40, 20 January 2013 (UTC)
- If you're not able to rescale the image yourself, it can be rescaled for you after it is uploaded. -- John of Reading (talk) 16:56, 20 January 2013 (UTC)
- I think it may be this one. File:Kanabar Entertainment logo.jpg is not eligible for copyright so I uploaded one to commons. The servers over there have been acting up and it keeps putting black padding around my versions. If you find a better one then just overwrite the failing one using 'upload new version of this file' at its commons page.--Canoe1967 (talk) 17:25, 20 January 2013 (UTC)
- You are very welcome.--Canoe1967 (talk) 21:22, 20 January 2013 (UTC)

You can probably just remove it all and in your edit summary mention it is old, and wasn't you. I am working on cleaning up
the List of Jewish American architects, and some other lists too, and was wondering if the "Contents" section (in this case, "A - Z") could be set up in a mutli-column format? As it is the list starts with mostly blank space. Book Feature Not Saving
Hi, my question is in regards to the Create A Book feature. I've tried on a number of occassions to begin a book, and have reviewed the help docs on the subject. I simply do not have the book come back between browser sessions. I stay logged in, that works, but the box to add an article is never there when I return. Photo gallery usage
I have a general policy question regarding the use of photo galleries in articles. I am hoping to get feeback from editors who are extremely knowledgeable on this topic. My question is simple: Is the photo gallery at the bottom of Hiram College appropriate usage of a gallery? Or, should it be removed? I looked at the articles of dozens of other Ohio and U.S. colleges, and there was no photo gallery in any of them. I also read WP:galleries very carefully; my interpretation of it is that the removal of the gallery in the Hiram article would clearly be warranted, as it is simply a collection of random campus photos. However, I do not want to simply remove the gallery without getting the thoughts of some "experts" first. I asked an administrator about this, but she was kind enough to acknowledge that images aren't her thing. Your input would be appreciated. --76.189.106.37 (talk) 21:20, 20 January 2013 (UTC)
- The relevant policy here is WP:Galleries, which says that the relevance of an image gallery to the article should be apparent and the gallery as a whole should be beneficial for a readers understanding of the subject. In my opinion, most of those images are unnecessary without any further context so I agree that this gallery should be removed. -- Toshio Yamaguchi 21:43, 20 January 2013 (UTC)
- Consider removing the Hiram College gallery per automated review, WP:NOT and WP:Galleries then placing the removed gallery on the talk-page. This is what I did with Ely—see the talk-page --Senra (talk) 22:32, 20 January 2013 (UTC)
- Toshio and Senra, thank you so much for the feedback. Senra, I'm totally lost on what you're suggesting, so can one of you please remove it in whatever way is appropriate? However this is handled, I just want it to be done properly and per guidelines, so I'd rather have someone with a lot more experience do it. Or I could just follow Toshio's guidance and remove it. Thanks. --76.189.106.37 (talk) 22:58, 20 January 2013 (UTC) 23:08, 20 January 2013 (UTC)
