HАGGER?
Ok, it's not the most important question ever but it seems to me, it could show a bug.
I just went to clean up my Watchlist. Among the articles I deleted from the list there was an "HАGGER?" in red. Possibly some very old work of a vandal. When I check the chenges done, I noticed there were still a few red links, "HАGGER?" included. So I went back to remove them (again or maybe a couple slipped my attention). Now all were gone a part from that "HАGGER?". I tried to delete it few more times. Every time I got a:
"A single title was removed from your watchlist:
HАGGER? (talk)"
But the "HАGGER?" was still showing in the list.
So I went to the Edit raw watchlist, found the "HАGGER?", removed, saved, checked.....and the beast was still there! (°_°)
I can live with it, still it's weird and it seems a bug to me. Has anyone got a clue?
Thanks in advance! --Dia^ (talk) 11:49, 19 August 2011 (UTC)
- That was a redirect created during the process of page-move vandalism. To remove it from your watchlist, use http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=H%D0%90GGER%3F&action=unwatch. Note the HTML encodings of the characters, since the "A" isn't really an "A"; it is a UNICODE look-alike. (I think the uppercase Greek alpha, which looks identical.) Additionally, it is hard to remove from your watchlist because the "?" is an HTML symbol that is interpreted as part of a GET request. Did this work? Reaper Eternal (talk) 12:01, 19 August 2011 (UTC)
- It's a known glitch. This procedure should work: Click "Edit raw watchlist", copy everything except HAGGER? to your own computer, delete everything from the watchlist, save the empty watch list, click "Edit raw watchlist" and copy everyhing back from your computer. correcting an article about me
i notice that is a very bad comment about me on Wikipedia:('http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Gjergj_cicani') the comment is in Albanian and the person who wrote, is badmouthing me. the reason why i say this is because i am the only person with this name living on tefta tashko street. the comment says: gjergj cicani living on tefta tashko street is the stupid person of this street. please feel free to contact me <removed contact information>, please can you provide me with the ip adress of the individual who made that note. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 79.106.3.17 (talk) 14:35, 19 August 2011 (UTC)

University of Liverpool
I'm not getting anywhere with discussing this issue on the University of Liverpool page, but basically there are two things that need updating on: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/University_of_Liverpool
1. The current crest displayed as the main image of the page has been confirmed by the University of Liverpool Press Office that it should no longer be used, and the new logo should be used instead. The new logo was moved down to the box below the website address, when the old crest was then added. This is the communication that I received from the press office: Dear Daniel,
The new logo is the one that should be used. Are you an editor for Wikipedia?
Best,
Kate (Redacted)@liverpool.ac.uk
This image (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:University_of_Liverpool_Crest.png) needs to be replaced with this one (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:University_of_Liverpool_logo_2007.png).
2. There is also a building image on the wiki page that displays the old logo and is no longer the main admissions/info office of the university (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:University_of_Liverpool_Building.jpg). It needs to be replaced with this: http://www.fcharchitects.com/cms/resources/08054a062-w600h480.jpg
Can somebody help me with the above?
Thanks,

- I have rearranged the logo/crest placement. Does that work? I am afraid that we cannot use this image unless the copyright owner releases it under an acceptable license. – ukexpat (talk) 16:52, 19 August 2011 (UTC)
- (ec)The best advice I can give is to continue the discussion on the talk page and work with the editors there to gain a consensus, discussion seems to be on going so there's no reason to think you're "not getting anywhere". Posting this request here would appear to be an attempt at forum shopping - and will be unlikely to get you anywhere, no one here can or will override any consensus gained on the talk page for you. how do i report vandels
How do i report vandels? i am sick of them changing stuff back to their vandalised nonscence how do i report them? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Delighted eyes (talk • contribs) 17:18, 19 August 2011 (UTC)
- After trying to tell them to stop (with appropriate warnings, etc) - you can report them on WP:AIV. Chzz ► 17:18, 19 August 2011 (UTC)
- Delighted eyes has a content dispute at stalking and appears to be trying to have their way by labeling edits by other editors as vandalism. Acroterion (talk) 17:27, 19 August 2011 (UTC)
- Yes, I was about to mention: my comment was only in the case of actual vandalism, of course. This edit isn't vandalism; it's a content dispute - so, for that, you'd need to discuss it / form consensus on the article talk page, in the normal way; WP:CONSENSUS etc. Chzz ► 17:31, 19 August 2011 (UTC)
Feedback on Proposed Edit to Spotify Article

wikimedia emails without a wikimedia account
I got an email to vote in the Wikimedia image referendum, at the bottom it said "To remove yourself from future notifications, please add your user name at http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_nomail_list." So I went to that page, it said I had to log in to edit, and when I tried to log in, I was told "There is no user by the name 'Severinus'". Because apparently I have a Wikipedia account, but not a Wikimedia account. But if I don't have a Wikimedia account and have no way of removing my email from Wikimedia's mailing lists, then Wikimedia should not be sending me emails. This is no different than getting spam with no way to remove myself from the mailing except by creating an account on the spammer's personal website. If I cannot log in to an individual Wikimedia project (e.g. to add myself to its nomail list), then that individual project should not have access to my account information such as email. If possible, an admin should both add my username to the Wikimedia nomail list and submit a bug report for this issue. This is not desired behavior. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Severinus (talk • contribs) 18:00, 19 August 2011 (UTC)
- While in your english Wikipedia account go to Special:MergeAccount to unify your accounts, you will then be able to remove yourself from the mailing list. Ryan Vesey Review me! 18:20, 19 August 2011 (UTC)
- So in other words, while all the wikimedia projects apparently have access to my account information and can send me emails, I have to take special steps in order to log into other wikimedia projects, in order to tell them to stop sending me emails. Do y'all not see that this is not how this is supposed to work? --Severinus (talk) 18:35, 19 August 2011 (UTC)

Quotations section
Is there a policy or guideline on the use of a "Quotations" section? I though there was something that said it was inappriate, but I can't find it now. (I am thinking in particular of the "Quotations" section just inserted in Albert Einstein.) —teb728 t c 21:01, 19 August 2011 (UTC)
- For starters, {{Cquote}} should never be used within an article. <blockquote> or {{Quote}} should be used instead. Ryan Vesey Review me! 21:03, 19 August 2011 (UTC)
- The External links section has a box linking Quotations from Wikiquote which is much more complete. Reading the discussion page there, most of those new quotes can't be sourced to Einstein. And ditto on the pull quotes. ---— Gadget850 (Ed) talk 21:11, 19 August 2011 (UTC)
- From WP:LONGQUOTE, a subsection of Wikipedia:Quotations: "Do not insert any number of quotations in a stand-alone quote section." That's all I could find. Like everything else on Wikipedia, we should treat this with common sense. I donl't think a quote section normally belongs, but I can think of special exceptions where it might be appropriate. For example, Yogi Berra, who is so famous for his malapropisms (Yogiisms) that they deserve a quote section.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 23:03, 19 August 2011 (UTC)

Redirect question
Hi, I've read up on Wikipedia:Redirect as well as Help:Redirect and I understand everything except for one thing: how exactly do I create the new page that would include the #REDIRECT code? The code makes sense to me, and I know that creating the page must be pretty simple, but there is a way to create pages without using the Article Wizard, right? I can't find a place anywhere that just says "Create Page". Thanks. Delaywaves talk 05:20, 20 August 2011 (UTC)

Photo of church
The photo you have for St.Mary's Church Maddington, is not correct. You have the photograph of St.Mary's Church in Shrewton. I know because I was married many years ago in Maddington Church. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 203.220.197.207 (talk) 06:09, 20 August 2011 (UTC)
- Our St. Mary's Church article lists several churches of that name but none are listed as being in Maddington or Shrewton. The closest, spelling-wise, is Shrewsbury. Could you be more specific which church you are referring to? Dismas|(talk) 07:10, 20 August 2011 (UTC)
- And I just double checked our picture of the one in Shrewsbury against a street view from Google Maps and they match. So, there's that. Dismas|(talk) 07:14, 20 August 2011 (UTC)
- I've added St Mary's Church, Maddington and St Mary's Church in Shrewton to the St. Mary's Church article. Very confusing having two of the same name in two parts of the same village. In the Shrewton article there are now references to both churches, and the Wiltshire CC links have photos of both, confirming the OP's initial statement. I've removed the erroneous photo from St Mary's Church, Maddington and from Maddington, Wiltshire, and labelled it correctly in Shrewton. If someone has a public domain photo of St Mary's Church, Maddington it could of course be uploaded and linked. Thanks to the OP for pointing out the error. - David Biddulph (talk) 07:25, 20 August 2011 (UTC)
- The photo clearly shows the same church as "Church of St. Mary, Maddington, Shrewton" on the Wiltshire Council page here. —teb728 t c 07:40, 20 August 2011 (UTC)
- According to the discussion on the Geograph page here, the problem is compounded by the fact that the OS map is in error in naming the wrong area as "Shrewton". Anyway, there is a free use image of the church with the castellated tower on that page, and a free use image of the uncastellated church here. When the confusion is sorted out (and I'm not going to attempt that now - too early in the morning!) either or both can be uploaded. Ghmyrtle (talk) 08:10, 20 August 2011 (UTC)
- Found one already uploaded, so I think that the photos are now sorted. The Shrewton article might benefit from a more detailed description of St Mary's Shrewton, along the lines of what's already there for St Mary's Maddington, but I'll leave that for the interested reader. - David Biddulph (talk) 08:47, 20 August 2011 (UTC)

- Wikipedia pages are created by volunteers, interested in a subject, who have the ability and motivation to start an article that can stick. In the case of this actor, only one person ever decided to start an article and all they created was one sentence, which was deleted since it failed to indicate the importance of the subject. If you are motivated and have the ability, signup for an account and you start it. That's how all of our articles are created. I suggest if you do so, you first go through the tutorial, you then read Wikipedia:Your first article and then you create it using the article wizard.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 08:19, 20 August 2011 (UTC)

- Incidentally, fact fans, the title "Queen Mother" was uniquely used by Her late Majesty as it was the first time that the reigning Queen's mother had the same name - normally they are still called Queen (for example, the previous Queen was called Queen Mary even though her husband the King had died) - you can't have 2 Queen Elizabeths at the same time, so her mother got the title to distinguish them -- PhantomSteve.alt/talk\[alternative account of Phantomsteve] 09:47, 20 August 2011 (UTC)

- Of course, there is a way to do what you want - install the Wiki software on your own server - you then have total control over everything on that wiki (I have a private wiki like that, but it's not a public wiki by any means! However, on this Wiki you can't do what you want, as excellently explained by OrangeMike -- PhantomSteve.alt/talk\[alternative account of Phantomsteve] 20:21, 20 August 2011 (UTC)

Uploading copyrighted photos I own
I have photos that I took that I'd like to upload, but want to maintain my copyright on them. I'd like them to be used only with my attribution and a note that I own the copyright. How do I upload such images? I found the section on uploading "free images," but I don't want to load my photos as that. Please direct me to the answer or send me the info. I need. Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by DonFisherJr (talk • contribs) 00:27, 21 August 2011 (UTC)
- Wikipedia accepts images that are released under the Creative Commons Attribution Share Alike licence, which seems to be what you want.
- If you upload the photographs at Commons, you can choose a licence. One option is Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 3.0 - that allows anyone to use the image, for any purpose, but they have to attribute the work (stating the 'author' that you enter) - that's the "Attribution" - and, any copies have to be under the same or similar license.
- For more details, see Commons:Licensing. Chzz ► 00:34, 21 August 2011 (UTC)
Copyright question
If someone were to take a picture of a statue which was created in the 1700's is the picture in the public domain or not? Can a picture of an uncopyrighted object be copyrighted? Ryan Vesey Review me! 00:45, 21 August 2011 (UTC)
- Yes, it can have a copyright. A photograph can almost always have copyright to it, regardless of what's in the image. Avicennasis @ 00:49, 21 Av 5771 / 00:49, 21 August 2011 (UTC)
- (edit conflict) I think the copyright status of the image has nothing to do with the statue, but only with who took the picture and when and if he or she is still alive or not. And yes, a picture of an uncopyrighted object can be copyrighted (we would normally assume that the person who took the picture is the copyright holder). If the image is still copyrighted depends on whether the person is still alive or not and if not, when he died and the copyright law of which country applies. - You mean you want the photo to appear in the article? First, I cannot see that you uploaded a photo at either her or commons. To insert a photo in an article you should enter [[File:PHOTO NAME.JPG (or whatever file it is in)|thumb|CAPTION]] Ryan Vesey Review me! 01:04, 21 August 2011 (UTC)

- (edit conflict)It would help us if you could give us a link to the image, but in general, you would add the filename in brackets to the infobox, e.g., for Market Square Arena, you would change
| nickname =

| caption =
- to include the image name like below (using the proper file name.)
| nickname =
| image = [[File:Example.jpg]]

Article talk page template for close connection
I know I've seen a template designed for article talk pages that stated something about close connection to the article topic. I can't find it now that I want it. (I know where to find the COI template for articles, but that's not the one I want.) Cloveapple (talk) 09:10, 21 August 2011 (UTC)
- I may be wrong but I suspect that you're looking for {{uw-coi}} or maybe {{coi-stern}}, both of which are placed on user talk pages rather than article talk pages.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 10:04, 21 August 2011 (UTC)

- Thanks. The {{Connected contributor}} should work for what I want. I now think the notice I was trying to re-find was somebody's unofficial creation because it was a non-standard color and was very brief. I liked it's relatively understated and neutral feeling, but with hundreds of thousands of random article talk pages to search, I doubt I'll ever see that particular page again.Cloveapple (talk) 16:36, 21 August 2011 (UTC)

adding a listing to a category
i am trying to add a listing about a writer from louisiana. there are several listed there now, but i am trying to add a name and an article, how do i do this? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jfalk67 (talk • contribs) 14:51, 21 August 2011 (UTC)
- The way to add a name to a category is to add the category to the article. For instance if you wanted to add a person to the living people category, you would add [[Category:Living people]] to the bottom of the article. GB fan please review my editing 14:58, 21 August 2011 (UTC)
- Are you trying to create a brand new article on a Louisiana writer? Or are you trying to modify an article that already exists? Have you seen the page at [3] that shows the 117 writers in the "writers from Louisiana" category? (Just to be sure they aren't already there.) If those questions aren't clear just tell us the name of the author you are trying to work on.Cloveapple (talk) 15:37, 21 August 2011 (UTC)

Photo submitted for article
Ryan, Thanks for the info. about putting a photo with an article. I'm still unsure how to do that, however. Here's the photo in question: File:MarketSquareArena1982.jpg — Preceding unsigned comment added by DonFisherJr (talk • contribs) 19:30, 21 August 2011 (UTC)
- Firstly, there is a problem with the copyright statement - it says, Credit will read: Photograph by Don Fisher, Jr., All Rights Reserved - we cannot allow images with copyright conditions like that (in bold); we only use images released under appropriate licences. You've chosen to release it under the GNU / Creative Commons dual licence - which allows anyone to use it for any purpose, as long as they give credit. You can't impose conditions beyond that.
- So, if you accept the commons-compatible licensing, you need to edit the file page, and remove that caveat. If you are not happy to accept the licences shown on that same page, then let us know, and it can be deleted.
- Now - regarding using it;
- The usual syntax is, on a blank line, [[File:filename.jpg|thumb|Put a caption here]]. The word 'thumb' makes it into a standard-sized thumbnail, on the right.
- For example,
[[File:MarketSquareArena1982.jpg|thumb|Market Square Arena in downtown Indianapolis, Indiana]]
You can see the result of that, on the right.*Struck, see below. -Chzz
- There are other options, but in the vast majority of cases, a standard-sized thumbnail on the right, with a caption, is the best solution; for more, see Wikipedia:Picture tutorial. For more on the copyright-side, see Wikipedia:Image use policy#Copyright and licensing. Chzz ► 19:43, 21 August 2011 (UTC)
- I have removed the photograph's display from here since, though it is at the Commons, it is not properly licensed for free use as noted above (and will be deleted from the Commons, if the license is not worked out).--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 19:46, 21 August 2011 (UTC)
- Good point; sorry, you're quite right; the copyright needs sorting out before we can use it; thanks, Fuhghettaboutit. Chzz ► 19:49, 21 August 2011 (UTC)
- Anytime. Right now this is little different than a fair use image being used outside of the article where its fair use is targeted. I just spent some time looking for a suitable template at Commons to tag this with, but I am not a regular there. I don't want to tag it for speedy deletion yet as I hope DonFisherJr will work this out soon.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 20:04, 21 August 2011 (UTC)

Numbered and unnumbered references
Why do some articles have both numbered references and unnumbered references? Example: in Extensive reading the first six are numbered.
Why does article Central processing unit have a "Notes" section (numbered) and a "References" section (unnumbered)?
--Mortense (talk) 20:14, 21 August 2011 (UTC)
- Easy answer: Someone seems to have mixed up things. In Extensive reading two different citation styles seem to be used side by side. This should be avoided and consensus should be reached on which citation style to use in the article. A 'Notes' section is often used for comments to a particular inline passage of text in an article. It can also be used to specify, where in a source information is located (for example by giving page numbers as footnotes, see the article Penrose tiling for an example of this citation method).
This citation method is called Harvard referencing. It seems in the article Extensive reading, someone tried to use Harvard referencing, but omitted the page numbers. Harvard referencing is a citation method, where the source is identified by the name of the author, the publication year and the page number in a footnote. This method is usually called shortened footnote referencing. When using this method, the source is identified by the name of the author, the publication year and the page number in a footnote. This short notation refers to a reference usually given in full detail in a seperate 'References' section (see WP:CT#Harvard reference and shortened footnote examples for more information). Sorry, I mixed some things up, however it should be correct now. Toshio Yamaguchi (talk) 20:41, 21 August 2011 (UTC)
- It is a mish-mash. I made some detailed comments on their talk pages. ---— Gadget850 (Ed) talk 20:57, 21 August 2011 (UTC)
- Note; anything challenged or likely to be challenged be attributed in the form of an inline citation (WP:V). Most, currently, do not. That means they need fixing. The exact format of the refs isn't so important; as long as the reader could reasonably hope to check the facts.
- What I mean is...lots of articles on Wikipedia (especially older ones) do not have specific, in-line numbered refs. They should. That doesn't mean we will remove them; it needs they need improving. Chzz ► 02:38, 22 August 2011 (UTC)
