Draft:Ossie Nicholson
Hi! I'm afraid I've had to remove the bulk of the body text from Draft:Ossie Nicholson, as it was much too close to this page. But I wanted to encourage you to persevere with the article, which is an interesting one about someone who is clearly notable by our standards and deserving of a Wikipedia page. The important thing is that everything you write must be entirely in your own words; you can take the concepts and facts from the sources, but the actual form of expression, the language that is used, must be entirely your own. Post here if you have questions about this – I should see that you have done so. Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 14:07, 25 March 2015 (UTC)
- Thanks for your encouragement. I have now saved a much revised draft. Could you let me know if you have any comments before I resubmit it. Find bruce (talk) 11:40, 18 April 2015 (UTC)
- Hi, Find bruce! Yes, I saw. It's very much improved, and I think it's now at the point where no-one would pick it up if there hadn't already been an alert. May I suggest that you go over it once more and rephrase in a few places? I suggest using this useful tool to identify where your text is still a bit close to that of the source. The trick (and it isn't always easy) is to avoid not just the exact words of your source, but also the "look and feel"; sometimes re-ordering the material (within reason!) can help with that. I'll be pleased to move the page into mainspace for you once the last few loose ends are tied up. Oh, and please remember to sign your talk page posts with four tildes, ~~~~ (the software automatically converts that into a dated signature). Regards, Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 10:08, 18 April 2015 (UTC)
Thanks again, I will have a look again in the morning. Neat trick with the tildes Find bruce (talk) 11:40, 18 April 2015 (UTC)
Thanks for your help Justlettersandnumbers. I think I have tidied up the last odds and ends. If you are happy to move the page into the mainspace, that would be great. Find bruce (talk) 11:57, 25 April 2015 (UTC)
- Sorry, got here late! I had a quick look at your draft. It's already better than a lot of our articles (which sadly is sometimes not that much of a compliment). I've got two suggestions: the first is pretty much a necessity: it needs more inline citations. Could you go through and add some more (I mean more citations of the sources you've used, not that you need to go and find new sources)? In general, any potentially contentious statement (and times, records, distances, achievements and so on all fall into that class) should have a cite no further away than the end of the sentence; if there's a long section all drawn from one source, slip in an extra cite or two in the middle of it; if you've used stuff from more than one source within a sentence, both should be cited (you've already done plenty of this, it just needs more). The second thing that could do with some attention is wiki-linking; a word like derailleur should be blue-linked – a lot of us don't know what that is; common terms ("wheel") should not be linked unless there's a good reason to.
- If the references are all in place when we take this to mainspace we could think about nominating it for Did you know, and perhaps get your name on the front page. I think there are five days from when you publish in which to do that. Nice work! Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 22:19, 27 April 2015 (UTC)
Thanks Justlettersandnumbers, I like the way you have gently encouraged me to improve the quality of the article. I have included the citations & wiki-linking. Any more suggestions ? Find bruce (talk) 06:35, 1 May 2015 (UTC)

Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 10:34, 1 May 2015 (UTC)- Find bruce, I am very pleased to have been involved in adding this interesting page to the project. Thank you for your comment above; it's been a good learning experience for me – this is the first draft I have accepted. If you are interested, I'd be happy to try and help you put together a DYK nomination for it. It would need a "hook", an interesting fact that catches the attention. Was he the first person to do 100,000 km in a year? Regards, Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 21:12, 1 May 2015 (UTC)
Is the hook that Nicholson is the only known person to have ridden 100 miles every day for a year ? Find bruce (talk) 11:12, 7 May 2015 (UTC)
