== Thanks == |

for the message. I read the talk on the link you gave - interesting to see it pointed out that the project doesn't have jurisdiction over categories - sometimes it really seems that the hockey group doesn t see it that way or that categories interconnect with other topics/areas (that the world doesn t actually revolve around hockey, not to say I don t enjoy it too) Not to excuse too some of the poor edits I have made in their eyes - I like details and nuances and this often gets me in trouble! == Hey == |
I should probably have said this awhile ago, but for what its worth you are doing great work with senior players and teams etc. Keep it up. It was a shame we got off to such a bad start. I do accept your explanation that you are not your nephew, but you have to admit that it looked very suspicious that as soon as me and you had an arguement that a very larger number of my articles were afd'd and related articles to those ones were prod'd all at once. The fact the CU (i am guessing) found you to be located in the same town didn't help matters but does show that I wasn't that offbase on thinking it was a possibility. Anyways I just want you to know that this is in the past atleast from my side. If you need any help with anything let me know. Senior hockey was an area that we were certainly lacking in and you have done alot there. I especially appreciate the stuff on the Port Arther Bearcats. I had been meaning to clean that one up for awhile as they are from my home town. -[[User:Djsasso|DJSasso]] ([[User talk:Djsasso|talk]]) 14:14, 24 September 2010 (UTC) |

Just FYI, Thanks for alerting about the discrepancy on the talk page about the article appearing on DYK. The original hook mentioned on the talk page was not the one which appeared on DYK on July 29; (See [[Wikipedia:Recent_additions/2010/July#29_July_2010]]). I have corrected the talk page with the correct hook. Happy editing [[User:Ottawa4ever|Ottawa4ever]] ([[User talk:Ottawa4ever|talk]]) 09:33, 22 October 2010 (UTC) |

Hi Dolovis. Great work so far adding player articles for [[SM-liiga]] players. Just a heads up, because I don't want to seem like that jerk who keeps prodding your articles, some of these players are not actually notable (ie: [[Jonathan Iilahti]], [[Matti Järvinen (ice hockey)]], [[Rasmus Rinne]], and [[Ville Hietikko]]). Players need to have actually played a game in the SM-liiga to gain notability, which none of these players have done. Merely being listed on a roster does not determine notability (see: [[Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Tom Fenton (ice hockey)]]). Additionally, just be aware that when you're creating these articles, you have been adding deadlinks for HockeyDB player profiles. I see that you have gone through and changed some to the proper link ID, but just note that without a working link, these articles are opened up to [[WP:BLPPROD|BLP-PRODs]], although I do see that you have referenced using a team statistics page (which in the case of the above listed players, does not even mention them as they have no stats with the team). Anyways, just wanted to let you know that I am by no means gunning after your articles, rather just trying to keep what should be off, off. Happy editing! – <font color="black">[[User:Nurmsook|Nurmsook!]]</font> ''[[User talk:Nurmsook|<font color="darkblue">talk...</font>]]'' 00:12, 3 January 2011 (UTC) |

I've continued the discussion here: |

linked to your discussion with Hmains (diffs only since Hmains has have removed it from their talk page) who has also repeatedly removed a wikilink on my page although I have explained the significance and relevance of that article in my comment undoing the first removal. I think JohnCD provides some info to support to your statement that the removal of dates was seen as "controversial". |

Thanks also for your comments about the behavior towards new users on your userpage. It may be better for new users to discuss issues with uninvolved editors beforehand. |

:The information that you added to the BLP article was completely unsourced. We are half way through round one of the WikiCup. Signups are now closed, and we have 129 listed competitors, 64 of whom will make it to round two. Congratulations to {{Wikipedia:WikiCup/Participant2|The Bushranger}}, who, at the time of writing, has a comfortable lead with 228 points, followed by {{Wikipedia:WikiCup/Participant2|Hurricanehink}}, with 144 points. Four others have over 100 points. Congratulations also go to {{Wikipedia:WikiCup/Participant2|Yellow Evan}}, who scored the first points in the competition, claiming for [[Talk:Hurricane King/GA1]], {{Wikipedia:WikiCup/Participant2|Miyagawa}}, who scored the first non-review points in the competition, claiming for [[Dognapping]], and {{Wikipedia:WikiCup/Participant2|Jarry1250}} who was the first in the competition to use our new "multiplier" mechanic ([[Wikipedia:WikiCup/Scoring#Double_points|explanation]]), claiming for [[Grigory Potemkin]], a subject covered on numerous Wikipedias. Thanks must also go to Jarry1250 for dealing with all bot work- without you, the competition wouldn't be happening! |
A running total of claims can be seen [[Wikipedia:WikiCup/History/2011/Running totals|here]]. However, numerous competitors are yet to score at all- please remember to submit content soon after it is promoted, so that the judges are able to review entries. The number of points that will be needed to reach round two is not clear- everyone needs to get their entries in now to guarantee their places! If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, and you hope to get it promoted before the end of the round, please list it on [[Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews]]. However, please remember to continue to offer reviews at GAC, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs which could otherwise be caused by the Cup. As ever, questions are welcome on [[Wikipedia talk:WikiCup]] and the judges are reachable on their talk pages, or by email. Good luck! <small>If you wish to start receiving or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from [[Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send]].</small> [[User:J Milburn|J Milburn]] and [[User:The ed17|The ed17]] 22:31, 31 January 2011 (UTC) |

== Categorization of people == |
Hey Dolovis. Just going through your new article creations, I have noticed that you are not properly sorting your categories. You're doing a great job categorizing the articles, but what you're missing is category sorting. You can check out the [[Wikipedia:Categorization of people]] and its subsection [[WP:NAMESORT]] for more information. Basically, without sorting categories like you have been doing, someone like "John Doe" will appear under the "J" section of the category, when in reality he should appear under the "D" section because people categories are to be sorted by last name. The easiest way to do this is to leave things the way you have done them, but in addition, use the <nowiki>{{DEFAULTSORT:}}</nowiki> template. For example, <nowiki>{{DEFAULTSORT:Doe, John}}</nowiki>. This will automatically sort each of the categories without have to add the pipe link to Doe, John for each individual category. You can add this template to the top of your category list for convenience. Hope you consider making these changes, as it will be a big help to the project. Cheers! – <font color="black">[[User:Nurmsook|Nurmsook!]]</font> ''[[User talk:Nurmsook|<font color="darkblue">talk...</font>]]'' 05:25, 1 February 2011 (UTC) |

== Notability question == |

Hello Dolovis. I have a question about notability for ice hockey players. Is the [[Czech Extraliga]] considered the top league in the Czech Republic? I am just asking because there is no mention about the Czech Extraliga on the notability section. |

:Yes, the [[Czech Extraliga]] is the top league in the Czech Republic and is also one of the “Top 7” European professional ice hockey leagues. == Categories == |
You know, I ''really appreciate'' the way you jumped straight to accusing me of unconstructive editing without trying to engage in discussion first. |
You could have left a message on my talk page asking me what I thought I was doing. It might, perhaps, have looked something like this: |
Dolovis, why did you revert my edits? I did read your edit reason, but I don't think it's valid. You said "All categories are supported by Hockeydb source in article", but that doesn't actually address my reason for removing the category tags. Category tags should not introduce any new information that is not ''in the article'', preferably clearly marked with a citation to its source. Saying that a link somewhere in the article points to a page that has the information is not all the same thing as having the actual information ''in the article''. |
And here is an example of why it matters: At least two of the categories you're being so protective of don't actually exist. Normally, instead of deleting them I would try to replace them with the correct categories, but the fact that the article doesn't contain any actual relevant information makes it difficult to determine what the correct category tags would be. —[[User:Paul A|Paul A]] ([[User talk:Paul A|talk]]) 07:09, 4 February 2011 (UTC) |

Slightly calmer PS: You might want to reconsider the way you use the user warning templates. My understanding is that the correct method is to send a warning, give the person a chance to lift their game, then give the next warning if they don't, and so on – the key point being that you're supposed to give them a chance to read and take in each warning before you send the next one. Giving them a second warning immediately, before they've had a chance to read the first warning and for something they did before you gave the first warning anyway, produces exactly the impression of not being given a fair go that the graduated warnings are supposed to avoid. In this instance, from my perspective you effectively went straight to "If you keep that up you'll be banned" from a standing start, which had a lot to do with how upset I was by your approach. —[[User:Paul A|Paul A]] ([[User talk:Paul A|talk]]) 07:41, 4 February 2011 (UTC) |
: {{tps}} With all due respect, because the issue branched across ''more than one article'', the use of escalating warnings was valid ... (insert deity of one's choice) only knows if there was going to be a third, fourth, fifth ... warnings on the whole mean little: if a block was going to come, the admin would have looked very carefully at it. ([[User talk:Bwilkins|<font style="font-variant:small-caps">talk→</font>]]<span style="border:1px solid black;">''' [[User:Bwilkins|BWilkins]] '''</span>[[Special:Contributions/Bwilkins|<font style="font-variant:small-caps">←track</font>]]) 11:59, 4 February 2011 (UTC) |

::This is my point: You can't reasonably say "he did this on more than one article, so he gets more than one warning". An enthusiastic and well-meaning but ignorant person could easily make the same mistake on over a dozen articles in a single spate of editing, and then what do you do? Give him all the warnings at once and then immediately ban him before he's had a chance to read any of them? |
::If you are going to warn somebody, the only fair way is to give one warning and then wait a bit to see if the warning is heeded. If the person continues in their ways ''after'' the warning was given, then you escalate. ''After'' is very important: what isn't fair is finding something else the person did before you warned them and treating it as if it's a sign they've ignored your warning. |
::Suppose somebody comes up to you and said "That thing you did? Don't do that." And then, two minutes later - during which time ''you have not done the thing they told you not to do'' - they come back and say "I told you not to do that." Would you not find that annoying? —[[User:Paul A|Paul A]] ([[User talk:Paul A|talk]]) 16:34, 4 February 2011 (UTC) |
::: Actually, I just got off the phone with someone where I actually had to say "look, you did this here; don't do it again", followed up by "geez, see, you did it again on this document too". Now, it doesn't mean that he's going to get fired ... but he got 2 warnings in the same phone call. ([[User talk:Bwilkins|<font style="font-variant:small-caps">talk→</font>]]<span style="border:1px solid black;">''' [[User:Bwilkins|BWilkins]] '''</span>[[Special:Contributions/Bwilkins|<font style="font-variant:small-caps">←track</font>]]) 19:10, 4 February 2011 (UTC) |

::::Two warnings, yes, but not ''escalating'' warnings. |
::::That's not coming back and saying "I told you not to do that!", it's coming back and saying "Look, here's another example of that thing I'm telling you not to do". That's fine; that's what I'm saying ''should'' happen. —[[User:Paul A|Paul A]] ([[User talk:Paul A|talk]]) 15:13, 5 February 2011 (UTC) |

::I expand articles as I gain an interest in them, so if I come across one you've started, I may do that. In the meantime, I would like to suggest that Wikipedia is better served by creating fewer, but better, articles. It doesn't take long to create a simple stub article. I would say it is better to create articles using more than just a hockeydb/eurohockey source. One good story on a player will lead to a much better article - even if it is only three or four sentences long - and will eliminate others throwing BLPPROD tags at you and the bot serving up copyvio complaints. There is no rush to create something on every player to play in a European major league. Just a little friendly advice. == Defenseman/Defenceman == |
I noticed that you are altering many articles to change the word "defenseman" to "defenceman". If those articles are in a bio of a U.S. athlete, that spelling is intentional. Please undo your changes. As you likely know, there are many national varieties of English which differ in some ways (mostly regarding spelling and vocabulary). Rather than choosing one variety as its official variety, Wikipedia has a compromise position stated in the Manual of Style section on [[WP:ENGVAR|national varieties of written English]]. It's a four factor test. Three factors (internal consistency, strong national ties of a topic, and retaining the existing version) weigh in favor of keeping the American spelling (defenseman) which already exists in an article about a U.S. hockey player. The fourth factor (opportunities for commonality) doesn't apply in this case, because there is no shared term that is being considered (it's just defenseman vs. defenceman). Thanks. --[[User:JamesAM|JamesAM]] ([[User talk:JamesAM|talk]]) 13:36, 11 February 2011 (UTC) |
