Hi, I've been told that you are the person to talk to if I would like to revoke my admin privileges. I'd like to do this as I'm leaving the project. This has nothing to do with being against the ideals of the project - they are wonderful and most likely achievable in some form, or anything to do with Wikipedia's perceived unreliability (though there are some issues that need to be worked on), or in fact anything to do with anyone I've encountered on Wikipedia! Imparciality at Risk
Hello, It is the first time that I try to contact you. Since you are a member of the Board of Trustees of Wikimedia, I thought that you could help as judge in a Controversy that has been for a long time regarding the West Bank article. It is virtualy impossible to colaborate in it, since another user keeps deleting and preventing to stated something. It is not fair for us, that try to stated a NPOV that, another is imposing its opinion or ideas. Wikipedia must be a free and balance (not in the FOX NEWS Channel way) enciclopedia and it is not right that somebody try to impose its point of view. Thanks, my user name is Messhermit and you can comparate both changes in the page History

Deletionism at Wikibooks
I notice you seem to oppose deletionism, so... Lots of it is happening over at wikibooks. The way it works is typically:
- Somebody puts serious effort (blood, sweat, and tears) into a book/article/module/whatever.
- Somebody is offended, and lists the article for deletion.
- Votes are counted...
- The author's vote is often discarded.
- Simple majority is considered consensus.
- Often, the offended person counts the votes.
- Voting is always considered valid, even with very few votes.
- Deletion is performed
- It is sudden, with no additional warning of how the votes were interpreted.
- Often, the offended person does the deletion.
I could go for 85% concensus with 95% statistical certainty. (so 17 of 19 would not do, but 1700 of 1900 probably would -- I don't have the tables handy) A reasonable shortcut to avoid statistical tables would be to always give the article some extra votes (15 perhaps) against deletion.
Sometimes things are even worse. The admittedly-unusual Cookbook:Human apparently had actual content, but did not get a vote. I suspect that the content was greatly in need of fixing, but I am unable to determine this now. (IMHO, all users should have access to deleted articles.) I have fixed a great many modules in the cookbook, and would have been happy to find an appropriate way to fix this one. (if you can ignore the awful pun, a tasteful way)

Deletionism
One of mine has just been deleted. It was about the humourous verse Boil it down widely known to writers to emphasise the need for concisness in writing, and was part of a section I had added to one of our tutorials on how to write. I have taken the week-end out before doing anything about it in order to cool down. My beef is that 1) the original request for deletion was made by an anonymous editor. 2) Nobody contacted me on my talk page to raise a query. Was the correct procedure followed here?
One of the respondents did make some suggestions as to where it might be better placed, but before I could do anything about it it was deleted. The problem seems to be that it was held to be no part of an encyclopaedia. But it was not ever meant to be an encyclopaedic article: it was part of a tutorial. Is there any means of splitting out essential tutorial links from the encyclopaedia proper? Clearly I put it in the wrong place and am glad to be corrected, but the tone of the language of the others fazed me somethat. There was, I gather, a Be kind to Newbies page. Maybe we ought to have a Be kind to experienced editors who make a mistake page as well. PS Happy Valentines Day! Apwoolrich 08:31, 14 Feb 2005 (UTC)
- If it's a tutorial, then it is likely Wikibooks would be a better place for it. Angela 18:12, Feb 15, 2005 (UTC)
UK Wikipedians event/Wikimania event
Hi Angela. Just thought I'd ask about these meetings: Is there a Wikimania event organising moot coming soon? If so is the Feb Uk wikipedian meet still on? - there's no activity on the page concerning TIME/PLACE etc.. Have i put people off? Sorry I am quite enthusiastic but worried that i have put a spanner in the works..Wikipedia:Meetup/London. >> max rspct 09:05, 14 Feb 2005 (UTC)
- I don't think you've put a spanner in the works. There just seems to be a lack of interest in anything happening at this time. Perhaps starting again and choosing a new date a bit further away would help? Angela 18:12, Feb 15, 2005 (UTC)
This page was on WP:RFPP for protection. But, prior to this, Help:Contents was requested for unprotection. Help:Contents was unprotected... so, I'm uncertain whether the request for the protection of Wikipedia:Community portal should be taken under consideration. The argument made for the unprotection of Help:Contents was that it didn't need to be protected indefinately. The same case could be made of the Main Page and the Community portal. What do you think is the best course of action? -- AllyUnion (talk) 01:19, 15 Feb 2005 (UTC)
- I don't see any reason for that to be permanently protected, but that's just my opinion. Maybe there ought be a vote on it. Angela 18:12, Feb 15, 2005 (UTC)

Help against vandalism

i think that only administers should have the ability to move page. the ability to move pages gives to much power to the wrong people. --Haham hanuka 12:00, 16 Feb 2005 (UTC)
- AllyUnion has done this already. If you see something like this again, just report it to Wikipedia:Vandalism in progress. The vast majority of page moves are made by genuine users for good reasons, so I don't think removing this ability from non-admins would be necessary. Angela. 17:45, Feb 16, 2005 (UTC)

- See Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/Standards. If you only found about WP:VIP today, there's still a lot to learn before you can become an admin. The Administrators' reading list would be a good place to start doing that. You don't need to be an admin to revert vandalism. Angela. 12:08, Feb 19, 2005 (UTC)
- "This should be no big deal" has been widely attributed to Jimbo. Do you disagree? I guess you can, but... non-admins are horribly restricted. I have a request for adminship (on wikibooks, not here) because of this. Regular users can not move a page over a redirect if it has been blanked or otherwise changed. Regular users can not even view deleted modules, making such users unable to salvage the good from the bad and unable to investigate suspicious admin actions. Regular users can not even delete their own typos, like the module I initially created with a "Coobkook:" prefix. I see that somebody else had done "CookbookL". (the "L" being next to ":" on the keyboard) AlbertCahalan 19:31, 19 Feb 2005 (UTC)

- I disagree that adminship should be "no big deal" for as long as it is a big deal to have someone's admin rights removed. If it were possible to remove bad admins, we could take the "no big deal" approach, but until then, it's quite reasonable to expect certain standards from a user before they can be an admin. Note that Jimbo's statement was made over two years ago, when the community was far smaller than it is now, and when the abilities admins held were far less. They couldn't even ban logged in users back then. This was also a year before the Criteria for speedy deletion page existed, and when VfD was a single page that could be handled by a couple of admins. There were far fewer policies, so adminship was a much simpler matter back then. It was also a time when admins could check on other admin actions far more easily, since there were only 20 deletions a day, compared to over 800 in the last 24 hours! It may not have been a big deal in 2003, but I don't believe that statement holds true now. Angela 21:38, Feb 19, 2005 (UTC)

More fun with JillandJack
A new user, Oirvine, has edited Quebec independence movement within the last 24 hours, reinstating verbatim almost every POV JillandJack edit that Curps and I edited out after the ban. User has exactly 13 other edits to their name besides this. Bearcat 17:03, 20 Feb 2005 (UTC)
- It doesn't surprise me. I don't think I should be the one to block him again though. Angela. 19:17, Feb 20, 2005 (UTC)
- I blocked the user, but received an e-mail from them today stating that they're not the same person and my blocking was in error. I realize that this still fits in with the user's prior behaviour, but I'm willing to consider the possibility that I may have been wrong...may I ask where I can post a request to have their IP reviewed against the other identities in question? My blog is back up now. It was just out of bandwidth after the Slashdotting of Wikimedia's fundraising drive since I had a backup of the fundraising page there. Angela. 09:58, Mar 1, 2005 (UTC)

New languages
I have been recently updating the meta:Requests for new languages page trying to make it more clear what needs to be done to start a wiki in a new language. I'd like to have someone from the Board look it over to make sure I'm not being presumptious -- the previous procedure was confusing, apparently ad hoc and seems to have left requests in limbo for a long time.
- I'll have a look tomorrow.
Since you are also a developer, I presume you have the power to make a new language wiki?
- I don't have that ability. Tim removed my shell access just before he quit.
If so, there are sixteen languages listed (in their own section) which should be created AFAICT from existing policy (which basically says just to propose it and, barring any objections, ask a developer to set it up). There are a couple others which would be ready for creation but have no proposed code (and no official ISO code), so soon enough, I'll make sure this silly little obstacle is overcome and they will then be ready. Since many of the people who are proposing new languages presumably don't know English (or de or ja or fr or other big wiki language) very well, if at all, they may be uncomfortable with finding and asking a developer, so I'm trying to streamline the process. Is there some other step that should be taken? There is a proposed requirement for five supporting users, but this isn't policy as of yet, so I'm assuming all it takes is one.
- No one has opposed the proposed policy, so I don't think it should just be ignored.
Anyway, I'm willing to work with the Board/developers on ensuring the most efficient system to do this, but there doesn't seem to really be a system right now, so I'm kind of making it up -- it appears the only way to get a wiki in your language at the moment is to pester Wikipedia-l in English, which is a bad system for developers, proposers and everyone.
- I think pestering wikipedia-l is more likely to delay a request than help speed up the process.
If there's no barrier to creation I don't know about, is there a specific developer in charge of creating new wikis?
- Basically, new wiki requests have almost always been decided by Brion. I don't know what policy, if any, he follows for this, but there haven't been many objections to that, which is why I expect people are happy enough for this to continue rather than trying to create a policy for it.
I'd actually like to remove the mailing list requirement altogether, since that seems rather un-wiki (and appears to be neither followed, nor very effective when it is followed).
- I agree.
Anyway, sorry for the rambling message, I just hate to see these requests (and the potential momentum behind them) linger on in limbo. Tuf-Kat 00:56, Mar 2, 2005 (UTC) (it would probably be best to contact me on my meta page.) Another question: one of the sixteen languages is Mikasuki (no en article), a Native American language with no ISO code. The proposer recommended nia, a generic code for unclassified North American Indian languages. Is it considered acceptable to use such a code? Tuf-Kat 01:00, Mar 2, 2005 (UTC)
- No. I think we need a better policy of what to do for wikis with no code so they remain consistent with each other. Angela. 01:25, Mar 2, 2005 (UTC)
Dilemma of ko
Hi Angela,
Ko has a dilemma: on one hand there are few users are active and experienced, on the other hand there is hardly found someone is willing to talk freely of e.g. following problems with which ko is confronted.
- It has happened pretty frequently that users move or redirect pages erroneously. There was even IP user who moved pages manually, since move action needs login, or since they will be anonym. It's not a matter of reason for moving article, but a matter of rules of move or redirect. It is common rule that history of moving article must be in any case kept. But that is not the case in point; history is not only lost, but also user who does this action appears unjustly as contributor of article. A very doubtful transaction! I do not think users who do it are not aware of this blunder. They are not newcomer. Moreover, I have recently edited much help pages and emended so that one learns easely rules and attentions like of move or of redirect. Although I've referred to this error, admins don't take any notice of it. Would you point out on ko bulletin board what admin should do in this and other case.
- I've also asked weeks ago for deleting a amount of pages as having violated copyright. They could be deleted by the deletion policy I've recently also new edited. They are still there. The list of deleting candidates is hier linked except [Template:저작권 위반]
- Another problem: I've indicated that Allmessages must be revised since Mediawiki version 1.4 has been installed. But nothing has happened (e.g. see Upload page and Login). So far as I know, Brion VIBBER has one times corrected Minoreditletter Newpageletter on the Recent Change. There are yet much messages to be revised and translated alike - therefore I had asked you per e-mail. -- --17:26, 2 Mar 2005 (UTC) 아흔(A-heun)
Can you direct me to some help?
I have reason to believe that a Wikipedian is being railroaded by another Wikipedian through the agressive use of sock puppets in a Request for Comment action. The Wikipedian that I think is using sockpuppets has already had a formal complaint placed against him last fall for the same behaviors. Can you refer me to someone, or a forum, or a discussion page where I can bounce my thoughts off of and get some feedback? Thanks, Jeri Jrossman 19:00, Mar 4, 2005 (UTC)
