Iron Maiden concert chronology |
The Final Frontier World Tour is a concert tour by Iron Maiden that began on June 9, 2010 in Dallas, Texas. The tour comes in support of the band's 15th album, The Final Frontier. The news was announced on the band's official website on March 5 under the following statement[1]:
"Iron Maiden are pleased to announce that their forthcoming new studio album will be called 'The Final Frontier', and is expected be released late summer of this year. The announcement comes with news of a North American Tour with Very Special Guests Dream Theater to open in Dallas, Texas, on 9th June and finish in Washington D.C. on 20th July, making it Maiden's most extensive North American tour in many years. Following these shows in USA and Canada The Final Frontier World Tour will travel back to Europe for a few selected major festival and stadium shows with the band planning to continue to many other countries in 2011."
Concerning the tour, Steve Harris said on June 7[2]:
“We’re hugely excited about this tour. I think the fans will really like the brand new stage production and lights and we will also be debuting one of the new album tracks, "El Dorado." Our Texan fans will be the very first people anywhere to hear it live, so it will be interesting to see their reaction and how it goes down with the crowd on the night! Eddie has changed a bit for this tour but is possibly the most outrageous one to date... I can’t say too much about him as don’t want to spoil the surprise but I guarantee he will scare the hell out of you!”
Opening bands
- Dream Theater on all North American dates except Winnipeg.[1]
- Automan in Winnipeg.[3]
- Heaven & Hell were scheduled to support in both Bergen, Norway[4] and Dublin, Ireland,[5] but due to Ronnie James Dio's ongoing battle with cancer, all of the band's summer concerts were canceled on May 4.[6] Dio later died on May 16, 2010.[7]
- Dark Tranquillity were announced as the Bergen replacement on July 25[8].
- Sweet Savage were announced as the Dublin replacement on July 7.[9]
- Edguy in Valencia.[10]
- Labyrinth in Codroipo, Villa Manin, Italy.[11]
Tour dates
The following are the currently confirmed tour dates:[1][12][13][14][15]
On 29 October 2010, a picture was placed on the band's website of Eddie, the band's mascot, holding the earth in his hands, with the region between Asia and Australia visible. This prompted speculation that the band would announce tour dates in the Asia-Pacific region; news reports earlier in October had said that the band would play shows in Indonesia.[16]
Set
During the tour, the stage was decorated in a futuristic manner befitting The Final Frontier. Two large antennae decorated the back corners, both topped by lights. A wraparound set surrounded the band and provided a runway for Bruce Dickinson, ending in two podiums on each side of the stage front. This included two curtains painted as doors leading to backstage from which the band entered and left the stage. "S-15" appeared multiple times on the set, a reference to "Satellite 15... The Final Frontier". As with previous tours, Nicko McBrain's drumkit featured a Sooty puppet, this time dressed in a spacesuit.
As per tradition, Eddie appeared during the song "Iron Maiden" in his new incarnation as an alien mutant. Complete with an "Ed-cam", he first attacked Janick Gers, then Dave Murray, before finally being given a guitar.
Eddie broke his guitar in Valencia, the last date of the 2010 tour, during the song Iron Maiden[17].
Setlist
After the Somewhere Back in Time World Tour, which focused on songs from the band's 1980s albums, the setlist for the 2010 leg of the Final Frontier World Tour consists primarily of songs from the albums the band has released since the return of Bruce Dickinson and Adrian Smith in 2000.
- Gustav Holst's "Mars, the Bringer of War" served as the intro for the tour.
- "The Wicker Man" (from Brave New World, 2000)
- "Ghost of the Navigator" (from Brave New World, 2000)
- "Wrathchild" (from Killers, 1981)
- "El Dorado" (from The Final Frontier, 2010)
- "Dance of Death" (from Dance of Death, 2003)
- "The Reincarnation of Benjamin Breeg" (from A Matter of Life and Death, 2006)
- "These Colours Don't Run" (from A Matter of Life and Death, 2006)
- "Blood Brothers" (from Brave New World, 2000)
- "Wildest Dreams" (from Dance of Death, 2003)
- "No More Lies" (from Dance of Death, 2003)
- "Brave New World" (from Brave New World, 2000)
- "Fear of the Dark" (from Fear of The Dark, 1992)
- "Iron Maiden" (from Iron Maiden, 1980)
Encore
- "The Number of the Beast" (from The Number of the Beast, 1982
- "Hallowed Be Thy Name" (from The Number of the Beast, 1982)
- "Running Free" (from Iron Maiden, 1980)
Notes:
- During each performance, Bruce Dickinson introduced "Blood Brothers" as a tribute to the late Ronnie James Dio.
- "Brighter than a Thousand Suns" (from A Matter of Life and Death, 2006) was played instead of Wrathchild in Dallas.
- "Paschendale" (from Dance of Death, 2003) was played rather than Dance of Death in Dallas, San Antonio, Albuquerque, San Bernardino, and Auburn.
Reception
The tour has received generally positive reviews in print media, being heralded as "out of this world" by the News of the World.[18].
The band members' respective prowess has been the subject of much praise, with Metal Hammer saying that "everyone was in top form"[19] and the Edmonton Journal commenting that "It's hard to believe that Maiden could have been any more energetic when they were at their peak in the early '80s; truly the metal gods have gifted these six with powers beyond that of mere mortals."[20]. Bruce Dickinson in particular has been referred to regularly as "the envy of a man half his age".[19][21][22][23]
Many publications have noted the wide range of ages present during the tour, complimenting the band's ability to maintain a young audience.[20][21][24]
The omission from the setlist of commonly played songs such as "Run to the Hills" and "The Trooper" has led to some criticism[20][25], with the Calgary Herald suggesting that "...striking a more even balance between that new material and the unsinkable, ironclad battleships of yesteryear, would have made an incredibly satisfying show that much greater".[22] The setlist has also been criticised for including only one song from The Final Frontier. Speaking in defence of the band's choice of setlist, Mike Portnoy of Dream Theater said: "I can understand that fans want to hear the hits, but I can understand that Maiden don't want to be stuck playing the same songs for the rest of their lives. They put out new music so they want to play the new music."[26]. Interviewed for Ultimate Guitar on July 15, Janick Gers responded to criticism of the setlist[27]:
"It's really important if you're going to remain a valid band that you play your new stuff. Otherwise you become a parody of what you started out doing. But it's impossible. Back in the early 80s you could probably do it, but now with YouTube and downloading, the songs would all be out before the album was out. We did Somewhere Back in Time and that dealt with the 80s, and the time before that we did A Matter of Life and Death, just the one album. You can't go out and play the greatest hits every time – it's important to play the newer songs because we really believe in them."
