Secretly Distribution was founded in 1997 to help get the music of a few growing labels more widely available to people. They work together with the Secretly Group label group to distribute music globally and exclusively for over 40 labels, all while maintaining warehouse headquarters in Bloomington, Indiana. The company has opened European offices based in Old Street, London which adds to a growing number of satellite offices, including LA, New York and Berlin. [1]
Secretly Distribution hosts an annual Label Distribution Summit where labels and artists affiliated with the distribution company travel to small town Bloomington, Indiana, typically in late summer. Attendees take part in numerous presentations, group discussions, and general meet & greets. The summit acts as an introduction for many members of the label family to the staff facilitating their distribution needs. [2]
The Secretly Group label group, established just one year before Secretly Distribution came into existence, is made up of 4 labels. These are the in-house members of the Secretly Distribution label family which include Secretly Canadian, Jagjaguwar, Dead Oceans, and Numero Group. Since 2007 a number of artist have appeared on the four labels either on contract or through distribution deals.[3]
The labels that fall under the banner of the Secretly Group have been responsible for some of the most defining records in independent music. Bon Iver, The War on Drugs, Sharon Van Etten and Black Mountain are just a few of the names that turn up in their catalog, along with lesser-known but just as essential records by groups like Wilderness and Jens Lekman. Perhaps most crucially, they released records by Jason Molina – under his own name as well as Songs:Ohia and Magnolia Electric Co. [4] The titles from Numero Group add to this legacy with their timeless reissues of vintage boxsets from established artists such as Jackie Shane, T.L. Barrett & The Youth For Christ Choir, Husker Du, and countless boxsets with various artists within varied genres and time periods.
