Pwalugu Tomato Factory, now known as Northern Star Tomato Company is a Ghanaian tomato processing plant located in Pwalugu in the Upper East Region.[1]
History
The factory was established by Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana's first president.[2] Pwalugu Tomato Factory was set up at the Northern Region of Ghana to process tomato into puree and paste for the local market as well as for export.[3] After an extended closure, the factory recommenced operations in 2006 as Northern Star Tomato Company.[4][5] It has the capacity to handle 500 tonnes of raw tomatoes per day.[6]
To sustain the factory's efficient operation, President Nkrumah established the Vea Irrigation and the Tono Irrigation facilities in the Upper East Region of Ghana to produce raw materials to feed the factory. In 2006, under Kufuor administration, the factory was revamped but could not operate to full capacity.
Also in 2009, through the Ministry of Trade and Industry, assisted the factory with funds to retool the factory, pay the salaries of its staff as well as purchase tomatoes from farmers.[7]
