Simon is a high school student known for creating About That, an online gossip group where he releases personal and revealing information about his classmates. At the beginning of a new school year, five students—Simon, Addy, Cooper, Bronwyn, and Nate—are given detention. After drinking a cup of water, Simon suffers a sudden and fatal allergic reaction. Nate notices that Bronwyn has stolen Simon's laptop. The following morning, the four students are introduced to Officer Miller, who has initiated an investigation on Simon's death, which was a result of a peanut allergy that spawned when traces of peanut oil were inserted into the cup he was drinking from. Nate encourages Bronwyn to return the laptop. Cooper talks with his brother Lucas and expresses his struggles with coming out. Nate, who is on probation, continues to sell drugs. The next day, Addy begins taking medication to deal with the stress she has as a result of Simon's death. At night, a memorial service is held for Simon where his best friend Janae sings "Fuck You" by Lily Allen. On About That, an anonymous user confesses to murdering Simon. Later, Bronwyn discovers that Simon's laptop is missing.

The second season picks up seconds after Bronwyn, Nate, Addy, Cooper, and Janae receive an ominous text from Simon Says, letting them know their secret is not as well kept as they thought it was. Nate decides to move out of his house after coming home to find his mother furiously drinking. Addy isn't handling Jake's demise well; to make matters worse she receives a gift from Simon Says. In an attempt to restore the school's good name, Principal Gupta has Nate start tutoring with Fiona, the girl Simon revealed to have stabbed her teacher for unknown reasons. Nate and Fiona seem to hit it off straight away. While most members of the Murder Club are trying to move on with their lives, Bronwyn sets a trap for Simon Says by filling a bag with paper instead of money and staking out the meet-up spot. Simon Says gets the Murder Club to meet back at the Hollywood Cinema, their old meetup spot. As they arrive, they find name tags for each of them on the front row seat. Simon tells the group that they want them to pay for hurting Jake. It is also revealed that Simon Says has a video from Halloween night, proving the Murder Club members were in the woods the night Jake disappeared.

Janae makes a murder board trying to find out who Simon really was. Addy is still haunted by Jake's words just like the nightmare she had the night before. Simon asks the five to bring Jake's watch by midnight. The five gather together at Janae's house and Cooper thinks that Simon is someone who wants money considering Jake's watch was at least worth $5,000. Addy guesses that Cole would want the watch for sentimental reasons but then recalls how the watch was on Jake when he died. This means that the watch was on his body that Nate and Janae disposed of at the bottom of the ocean. Janae and Nate spill that they had not thrown his body at the bottom of the ocean but in a freezer on her parents' private yacht.
The group thinks about the consequences of bringing the body out in the open when Addy thinks back to how everyone was going to suffer for her mistake. Addy states that she can own up to killing him and end the nightmare but the five state that it is too late for that now. Cooper gets Addy to open up about Jake where she discusses her nightmares with him. Bronwyn is worried that Addy will crack and rat them all out, bringing everyone down in the process. The five decide to attend Vanessa's #JusticeForJake rally and take her phone away. Janae rats Cooper out for telling Kris what happened but Bronwyn lets it slip that Maeve also knows. They end up pointing fingers at each other but Addy forces them to calm down as Jake's ghost continues to torment her. Janae confronts Maeve and apologizes but the two kiss and make up. Maeve tricks Vanessa into revealing the username of the person who sent her the photo of Jake wearing the same watch as Cooper. Meanwhile, Addy is brought center stage to make an appeal to Jake and ask him to come back. Instead of doing that, Addy reveals that Jake was really the person that killed Simon and asks him never to come back leaving everyone shocked. Cole hands the watch to the sheriff sure that the group was hiding something.

Vanessa begins to crack down on her investigation into Murder Club. She sneaks onto Janae's boat just before Bronwyn and Nate come in and start to make out. They talk a bit about what has happened recently, but the way they speak begins to convince Vanessa that they are guilty. Her phone rings, they discover her, she threatens to drop Stan the lizard out a window and flees. She begins to go through pictures of Halloween, finding Bronwyn, Nate, Janae, and someone in a bear costume she thinks is Maeve. Then, she gets Keely and Evan over, and presents a convincing timeline of the party. On a hunch from Keely, they visit Keely's abusive ex-boyfriend, who Keely punched at the party after he tried to force himself on her. He reveals that, in a drunken stupor, he went near the cliff and saw Jake's car driving down the road, chasing someone on a bike (Addy). He then attempts to get Keely back to him through intimidation, but is stopped by Vanessa, who has been recording the situation and threatens to "post the shit out of this video, and tag your problematic ass." She also notes that things never go well for guys who demean women on camera. They go to where he saw the car; Evan compliments Vanessa for her handling of the situation and suggests she become an investigative reporter. They drive down the road until they hit where Vanessa started a hunt for evidence. Vanessa climbs down a small cliff and finds Jake's license plate. Saddened, she goes home. She then strikes a deal with a local news show, promising to reveal key evidence about where Jake might be. Afterwards, she begins looking up colleges that have courses for reporting. She posts a video, celebrating, but Simon Says threatens to harm her if she goes on the show, and puts a camera on her phone showing that Simon Says is just outside her fence, watching her. Rattled, she closes the curtains. The next day, Murder Club is sitting in a school corner, and she confronts them. After the school day is over, she goes to the studio and begins to get ready for the show. Evan stops in to compliment her one more time, and leaves. She drinks some water, but rustling in her costume rack turns her around. There's a clatter coming from her room and Evan, confused, comes in to check on her and finds her room in tatters. Vanessa wakes up in a car trunk, evidently kidnapped by Simon Says.

Production
One of Us Is Lying is the 2017 debut novel of Karen M. McManus. In September 2017, Universal Content Productions announced it had acquired the rights to the novel and would produce a television series adaptation to be released on E!.[3][4] In August 2019, the project was moved to NBCUniversal, who gave the then-unreleased streaming service Peacock its first pilot order with the series.[5]
In September 2019, it was reported that Jennifer Morrison would direct the pilot episode.[6] Auditions began that same month,[7] and in October, Marianly Tejada, Cooper van Grootel, Annalisa Cochrane, Chibuikem Uche, Jessica McLeod, Barrett Carnahan, and Melissa Collazo were announced as part of the cast.[8] In joining the series, van Grootel, Cochrane, and Uche all said they had not heard about the novel before they auditioned.[7][9] Filming for the first episode took place in Vancouver, starting on November 2, 2019,[10] and concluded on November 20.[11]
On August 12, 2020, the project became the first from Peacock to receive a series order.[12] The remaining seven episodes started shooting in New Zealand on May 10, 2021,[13] with filming scheduled to conclude on September 24, 2021.[10] That same year, Mark McKenna was confirmed as a series regular in July;[14] Martin Bobb-Semple, Karim Diane, George Ferrier, Miles J. Harvey, Zenia Marshall, and Sara Thompson were announced as part of the recurring cast in August;[15] and Alimi Ballard was confirmed in October.[16] In an interview, series showrunner Darío Madrona was asked if the series would stay faithful to its source material; he responded by saying, "We've been faithful to the spirit of the story and the themes and the characters, but also trying to add some little twists and turns here and there so we can surprise readers of the book."[17]
On January 14, 2022, Peacock renewed the series for a second season, with Saleh replacing Madrona as showrunner.[18] In May 2022, Joe Witkowski and Doralynn Mui joined the cast in recurring roles.[19] The second season premiered on October 20, 2022.[20] Sara Thompson and Alimi Ballard were promoted to series regulars for the second season.
Reception
The first three episodes premiered on Peacock on October 7, 2021, followed by three episodes on October 14, and the final two episodes of the first season on October 21.[21] On the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, 89% of 9 critics' reviews are positive, with an average rating of 7.0/10.[22]
Before its premiere, critics were given the first three episodes to review. From The Wall Street Journal, John Anderson said the series was difficult to categorize and wrote, "what distinguishes the series as storytelling, is the way it careens its way through its various plot points, unencumbered by the need for explanations or narrative development. We don't need all that. The conclusion will be a surprise, one assumes. But the getting there is, as they might say in French class, déjà vu."[23] Brad Newsome, writing for The Sydney Morning Herald, said the story "deftly tweaks its balance of suspicions to keep things interesting, but it's McKenna and Van Grootel who really pull focus."[24] The Hollywood Reporter's Angie Han said the series was missing a spark to set it apart from similar programming, with characters that feel like "archetypes," a "sour, dour mood, with few moments of either levity or raw pain," and dull colors that "keep the show's emotions at arm's length. The story moves forward at a painless pace, and the characters are easy enough to like, if not really interesting enough to love. But without any notable quirks or deep insights, it's also a show that seems likely to disappear from memory as soon as that binge is over."[25]
