Markušica (Hungarian: Márkusfalva, Serbian Cyrillic: Маркушица) is a village and a municipality in Vukovar-Syrmia County, Croatia.
Geography
The municipality have total area of 74.29 km2. River Vuka flows through the municipality and territory of the municipality is completely flat very fertile black soil. It is connected by D518 highway with rest of country.

Population
There are 3,053 inhabitants,[2] the majority of the population which are Serbs, who make up 90.76% of the population according to the 2001 population census.
Languages
Due to the local minority population, the Markušica municipality allows the use of not only Croatian as the official language, but the Serbian language and Serbian Cyrillic alphabet as well.[3][4]

Markušica municipality is one of seven member municipalities of Joint Council of Municipalities, inter-municipal sui generis organization of Serbian community in eastern Croatia.
Economy
Markušica development index is less than 50% of the Croatian average,[5] which classifies them into 10% of the poorest municipalities. Therefore, the municipality is part of the Areas of Special State Concern.[6]

Points of Interest
Markušica Municipality is famous for the monument dedicated to fallen soldier from World War II. Village have a unique monument of a female Soviet pilot from the Red Army, who fought against the Nazis and whose plane was shot down here. The village also have an interesting Orthodox Church from 1810, church was damaged in the war in Croatia.
Food and drink
Due to the geographic position local cuisine is a mix of different influences. The main influences come from Croatian cuisine, Serbian cuisine, Bosnia and Herzegovina cuisine, Turkish cuisine, Macedonian cuisine, Austrian cuisine and Hungarian cuisine. There is no specific separate cousine of this region but rather continuum with surrounding areas with certain specific elements.
Some of the popular dishes are Sataraš, Punjena paprika, Sarma (food), Čvarci, Pita, Kulen, Goulash, Burek, Proja, Pasulj, Moussaka, Yogurt, Kaymak, Feta, Serbian salad, Ajvar, Krofne, Tavče Gravče, Kompot, Honey, Fisherman's soup, Powidl, Chicken soup, Schnitzel, Knödel, Hungarian sausages, Poppy seed roll...
Popular spice is Vegeta (food). Popular ceremonial sweet are Koliva used at Slava and Česnica.
A popular non-alcoholic drinks are Turkish coffee, tea, Knjaz Miloš AD, Jamnica (company), and alcoholic are Rakia, Jelen pivo, Karlovačko, Ožujsko.

In the village exist a volunteer fire department Markušica.[7]
