Sergeant Major Karl Ley Royal Logistic Corps a British Army bomb disposal expert from 11 EOD Regiment] received a citation for George Medal for Bomb Disposal duties in Afghanistan where he defused more roadside IED's than anyone else during his six month tour of duty[1]
Early Career
Born in Sheffield. Ley joined the British Army as an Ammunition Technician in the Royal Logistic Corps
Afghanistan
Ley was sent on Active service with the British Army in 2010 as part of the task force engaged on OP Herrick, during this period Ley was was a Staff Sergeant at the time was engaged in Operation Moshtarak as part of the 15,000 troops involved in the operation. Ley was posted to the Counter-Improvised Explosive Device (C-IED) Task Force, who are responsible providng IEDD operations to the task force. During the operation Ley was interviewed and commented "We were on MOSHTARAK before MOSHTARAK started. We had to make sure that the routes were clear of devices so that the infantry guys could pass through safely." he goes onto say "Essentially it's my team's job to get rid of the IEDs. We work closely with a seven-man REST [Royal Engineer Search Team]. If a device has been found my team take the lead to get rid of it and we are backed up by the RESA [Royal Engineer Search Advisor]. If we are conducting a search, they lead, and we are called upon if something is found.
"We move around each of the battle groups and become their asset for whatever they need us for; responding to a call if a device is found or a deliberate search op[2]
