Ghost of the Robot is a rock band, based in Southern California. It gained a following mainly due to its lead singer, actor James Marsters. Influences include, Weezer, Jimmy Eat World, Ben Folds, The Beatles, Muse, Radiohead, Bob Dylan and Rolling Stones, among others.
Formation and early years
Both Charlie De Mars and Aaron Anderson were initially in a band called Soccer Hooligans, however after recording and releasing their debut self-titled album, the band split up. De Mars and Anderson then formed a band named Power Animal along with two other musicians, Kevin McPherson on bass and Drew Steen on drums. After a few shows, Steen departed from the band, thus leaving the group as a trio. Later on, De Mars decided to quit his job at a corporate clothier and move in with Steven Sellers, his step-brother, in Los Angeles. Both James Marsters and Charlie De Mars were then introduced to each other, without Charlie realizing who Marsters was and they all became close friends. De Mars and Marsters then began writing songs as well as playing guitar together, leading to them inviting the rest of the members from Power Animal to form the band, Ghost of the Robot. The band is also notable for playing at the local live music venue and bar, 14 Below in Santa Monica, California.
Mad Brilliant and breakup (2002–2004)
The band recorded their first studio album, Mad Brilliant in five days, a showcase of De Mars' song writing skills, with Marsters writing "Dangerous", "Angel"' and Sellers writing "Valerie". The album was a sell-out success, as were both European tours in 2003 and 2004.
On their 2004 European tour, the band chose to release an EP entitled It's Nothing, giving a taster from their long awaited second album. The second album was not released as Marsters left to pursue other creative activities, leaving the band to its original form Power Animal who shortly thereafter released their album Vs. the world.
Marsters went on a successful solo performer career with a sold-out tour in the UK in April 2005. The other band members continued in several different bands including Friendship, Fictionist, Gods of the Radio, Power Animal and Demi Lovato.
Reformation, B-Sider and third studio album (2010 – Present)
Ghost of the Robot has reformed and played few gigs in late 2010 as well as releasing a compilation album, B-Sider on March 15, 2011. It is a compilation of all their EPs and singles, which was released by EyeLAshout on iTunes and Amazon, as well as their first album, Mad Brilliant on March 5, 2011. James Marsters' son, Sullivan Marsters will be involved in several songs by the band filling in as one of the guitarists.
In March 2011, few song names of the upcoming album have been hinted at on the band's Facebook page including, "If This Is Love", "Truth Is" and "OLOE" and several others were also later revealed in May. In April, on the band’s Facebook page, it was noted that a documentary of Ghost of the Robot may be in the works, entitled, “The Worst Best Band” (working title), several excerpts were released and can be found online.
Their third album has been recorded and will be named Murphy's Law, which was chosen from a group of names pitched and voted for by several fans on their Facebook page. On July 11, 2011, it was announced that the band will be hosting a listening party of the new album on July 29, which will be followed by a Q&A session with the band as well as the announcement of the release date of the album.
