Tomato salad (Italian: Insalata pomodoro or simply insalata) is a basic Italian salad, made of sliced tomatoes, Red onion, and basil, seasoned with salt, oregano and extra virgin olive oil, occasionally paired with chili pepper. It is a simple dish from Calabria in southern Italy, most common in the summer months when tomatoes are most ripe. Usually eaten from a bowl with a crusty Italian bread.
History
Upon arrival to Italy, the tomato became a staple of the cuisine. When tomato salad originated is unknown, but in 1544 Pietro Andrea Mattioli, an Italian physician and botanist, cooked and seasoned with salt, black pepper, and oil. It was not until ten years later that tomatoes were named in print by Mattioli as pomi d'oro, or "golden apples."
