Nava Mau (born May 14, 1992) is a Mexican actor, writer and producer.
Biography
Nava Mau was born in Mexico City on May 14, 1992, the daughter of a counsellor (her mother) and an accountant father. [1]. She was raised in San Antonio, Texas and Oakland, California. She is a graduate of Pomona College in Claremont, California, earning a degree in Linguistics & Cognitive Science[2].
Mau has starred in the HBO series Generation, stylized as Genera+ion, as part of the show’s main cast. She played the part of Ana, the aunt of one of the series’ main teenage characters[3]. She was also the lead actor, director and producer of Waking Hour. In this film, Mau starred as Sofia, a young transgender woman who meets a potential romantic connection Isaac, a cis man, at a party. Mau's character must balance her desire to be intimate with someone and her own sense of personal safety[4].
Mau was selected as a production fellow for the Netflix documentary “Disclosure,” and worked as a producer on the short film “Work,” which premiered at Sundance. [5]
Mau also stars in the Netflix series Baby Reindeer where she plays the role of Teri, an American therapist and love interest of the series' protagonist[6]. She is an editor of the forthcoming anthology Paradise on the Margins: Worldmaking by Trans Women of Color.[7] [8]
Personal Life
Mau is trans. She is an award winning advocate in the fields of healing justice and culture change with community-based service providers, student organizations, and survivors of violence. [9]
Mau has worked with survivors of violence, first with immigrant survivors as a legal assistant, and then as a peer counselor and advocate for LGBTQ survivors of violence in the San Francisco Bay Area.[10]
