Detective Sergeant Florence Cassell is a character in the crime drama television series Death in Paradise, portrayed by Joséphine Jobert.
Background
Florence was raised by her mother and father in Jamaica with 5 brothers. At 27 years old, Florence, applicant to work as a police officer (later accepted), was introduced in series 4 as a replacement officer for Fidel Best, who was in the first three series. She was a police officer for the first half of the season before being promoted to Detective Sergeant in the wake of DS Camille Bordey's, actress Sara Martins, departure.
Series 4 (2015) – Series 8 (2019)
Up until series 6 she worked alongside DI Humphrey Goodman before he left to go to London with his fiancée Martha Lloyd. The new detective, DI Jack Mooney, was introduced by Florence to the rest of the team after helping Humphrey in the case that took place in London. She has a relationship with Patrice Campbell who later becomes her fiancé. This eventually leads to Florence's first exit after he is murdered and she barely survives as she leaves Saint Marie. Her actress Joséphine Jobert furthermore went on to say she needed to leave the show for a short break for personal and professional reasons. It was confirmed that she would be replaced by DI Dumas, who would feature in the series from the end of series 8 to all of series 9.[1]
Series 10 (2021) – Series 11 (2022)
After a hiatus and mostly enough time to recover, Florence returns in series 10 episode 1 to Saint Marie and is given her old job back by the Commissioner, Selwyn Patterson after Madeleine Dumas' exit with his niece, Ruby. She meets Neville Parker, portrayed by Ralf Little, in an awkward encounter. During the whole of series 10, Neville has had feelings for Florence and eventually asked her if she wanted to go out with him. In the 2021 Christmas special after a long cliffhanger, Florence politely rejected, leaving Neville devastated.[2]
In 2022, Jobert confirmed that she didn't know how much longer she would be on the show for and hinted at a possible exit for Florence. In series 11 episode 2, Florence is offered the chance to be an undercover police officer and take her skills to the next level. Her first mission was to catch mafia boss Miranda Priestley, who was assumed to be under a drugs organisation. (See more for her character and the special episode's guest stars)[3] and her criminals by being a house maid unexpectedly at Saint Marie after thinking her task was elsewhere. Later, Neville and the team join forces with Florence when a murder occurs that involves Miranda. Desperately, Florence tries to get as much information as possible without being suspicious to solve the murder and finally catch Miranda and her gang. In a dangerous turn of events in series 11 episode 4, Miranda confesses she knew Florence was undercover at the start and holds her at gunpoint in a grassy field to ultimately kill her. A gunshot is heard not far away from the police station as Neville, Marlon, Naomi and Darlene rush to save her before it's too late. When they arrive, they discover that Florence had managed to get the gun from Miranda and shoot her in the arm. At the end of the episode, now in witness protection and going into hiding, Florence leaves Saint Marie once more and for most likely good this time because it held too many bad memories for her. Her and the team bid farewell as they part ways, with Florence saying goodbye to Neville and her colleagues. Her exit came as a shock to viewers. [4][5]
Series 13 (2024)
Throughout the start of series 13, her return was hinted. As well as Josephine hinting back in May 2023 after commenting about series 13's filming. [6] In series 13 episode 6, the final moments of the episode saw Commission Selwyn Patterson get a call, in which his facial expression shows he is very surprised. On the other side of the phone is Florence driving a car on a nearby sunny mountain where she says the famous line "It sure is Sir, miss me?" before the episode ends there.
In series 13 episode 7, it was confirmed that Florence's witness protection status was terminated and she was able to go back to her normal life again. She reunites with Dwayne and Darlene on the beach as she is hired to solve a complex case on St Auguste.[7] Meanwhile, back in Saint Marie, Neville and Naomi work on the case over there. Neville is reunited with Florence via facetime to help gather information on the case. The pair exchange messages to how Neville missed Florence to Florence replying that she missed him too, with an 'X' on the end. Florence and Darlene head to a bar on the St Auguste Island as eventually Florence tells her she has missed Neville a lot more than she thought she would've before Dwayne joins them. [8] Darlene later tells Florence that Neville is going travelling and leaving Saint Marie. Florence, eager to show her feelings she grew for Neville during her lonely 2 years, decided she was going to head back and attempt to stop him from heading all over the world.
In Series 13 Episode 8, Florence is initially stood up by Neville. However, when she is approaching her boat, Neville returns and stops her to explain his feelings and to be with her. The pair head off into the sunset together on the boat, giving themselves a shot at being a couple, whether it lasts or not is unclear.
