Clio Newton (born 1989) is an American artist based in Zurich, Switzerland. Her work uses a language of realism to create large format figurative compositions.[1] With a desire to have her subjects "return the gaze" Newton uses the size of her work to invert the viewer/subject relationship,[2] representing her sitters as confident, unflinching and self-possessed.[3] Newton's work reflects her interest in physiognomy and a desire to suggest the inner psychological world of her subjects through idiosyncratic, evocative portraiture. Many of her compositions, figures set against flat planes of color, or offset by the white of the paper, present as anonymous monuments, revealing minimal information about their identity.[4] Newton is most well known for her large scale compressed charcoal portraits of women.[5] [6]
Often working in series, Newton completed her project entitled Bathers in 2018, which featured portraits of women whom she met swimming at Lake Zurich.[7] [4] Newton's debut solo show, Venus, with Forum Gallery in New York City, 2019, explored ideas surrounding historical representations of the body and gender in Western figurative art.[8] Her work has been added to the public collections of The Flint Institute of Arts, Flint, MI and the 21C Museum in Louisville, KY.[1] Notably, Newton's work was collected by the Baltimore Museum of Art in 2019.[9]
Personal Life
Born in Madison, Connecticut, Newton was the second of five children. As a child, Newton spent a lot of time painting and drawing next to her father, an artist himself, in his studio.[10] With support from her parents, Newton first took figure drawing classes at Lyme Academy of Fine Arts in Connecticut at the age of 12.[4]
She moved from the United States to Switzerland after receiving the AKKU artist in residency grant award in 2016[4]
Education
Newton received her Bachelor of Fine Arts at The Cooper Union in New York City[11] and a Master of Fine Arts at Zürcher Hochschule der Kunste in Zürich, Switzerland.[12] She has additional studies at The Florence Academy of Art in Florence, Italy.[4]
