Augusto Heleno Ribeiro Pereira (born 29 October 1947) is a retired general of the Brazilian Army. Son of Ari de Oliveira Pereira and Edina Ribeiro Pereira, he is married to Sônia Pereira and has two children: Renata and Mário Márcio. He was head of the Amazon Military Command and Head of the Army Department of Science and Technology. He has expressed clearly critical positions regarding official policies, particularly with regard to the attitude of the international community towards Haiti and the indigenous policy of the Brazilian government.
Military career
He graduated the rank of in 1969, at the Agulhas Negras Military Academy, at the top of his class of cavalry. He also was at the top of his cavalry class at the School of Improvement of Officers (EsAO) and the School of Command and General Staff of the Army (ECEME), receiving therefore the gold medal Marechal Hermes with three crowns. In the rank of Major, he integrated the Brazilian military mission of instruction in Paraguay. As colonel, he commanded the Preparatory School of Cadets of the Army (EsPCEx), in Campinas, and was a military attache of the Brazilian Embassy in Paris, also accredited to Brussels. As a general officer, he was commander of the 5th Armored Cavalry Brigade and the Army Physical Training Center, head of the Army's Social Media Center and the Army Commander's Office.
From June 2004 to September 2005 , he was the first military commander of the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH), which had 6250 helmets from 13 countries, seven of them Latin American. Like the Chilean ambassador Juan Gabriel Valdés, Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the UN and head of the mission, and the governments of Latin countries, General Heleno expressed his disagreement on the strategy adopted by the international community towards Haiti. [ 1 ] He was succeeded by General Urano Teixeira da Mata Bacelar, who would end up committing suicide in Port-au-Prince four months later in January 2006. In 2006, he gave a speech at the controversial School of the Americas. [ 2 ]
As military commander of the Amazon , General Heleno challenged the Lula administration's indigenous policy , which he described as "regrettable not to say chaotic" during a lecture at the Military Club in Rio de Janeiro, at the time of the demarcation of the indigenous land of Raposa / Serra the sun . He affirmed that the Indians "gravitate around our platoons because they are completely abandoned." [ 3 ]
His last active duty was as head of the Department of Science and Technology . On May 9, 2011, at a ceremony at the Army Headquarters in Brasilia, he moved to the reserve and defended the military regime of 1964, [ 4 ] after 45 years of military life. [ 5 ]
Life after retirement
He worked as a security and military affairs consultant for the Bandeirantes de Comunicação Group , where he also collaborated with comments on the broadcasters' programming. [ 6 ]
He held the position of director of communication and corporate education at the COB ( Brazilian Olympic Committee ). [ 7 ]
Political career
On July 18, 2018, circulated the news that would be nominated as a candidate for the Vice Presidency of the Republic , on the plate of Jair Bolsonaro . [ 8 ] [ 9 ] The general denied the candidacy, as it was not of interest to his party. [ 10 ] However, continued to support the Member's candidacy for presidency and was called to be his Minister of Defense. [ 11 ] With the election of Bolsonaro on October 28, 2018, he must take office on January 1, 2019
