Actress Trisha, who was last seen in Kodi, has said to be signed her next with actor Vijay Sethupathi for the upcoming yet-untitled Tamil film[2] which will be helmed by cinematographer Prem Kumar of Naduvula Konjam Pakkatha Kaanom fame.
M. S. Bhaskar's son, Aditya Bhaskar makes his debut as the younger K.Ramachandran ( Vijay sethupathy ). Devadharshini's Daughter, Niyathi Kadambi, is playing the younger age of her role. Speaking about the film, a source was quoted said that, "Trisha has been finalised as the female lead for the project. However, the actress is yet to sign on the agreement officially. Prem Kumar had narrated the script to Sethupathi months ago, and he was impressed with it. Trisha's role will be a solid performance-oriented one. The rest of the cast and crew is yet to be finalised."[3][3]
Trisha finally revealed the title of her movie with Vijay Sethupathi as ‘96’, which is believed to be denoting the year 1996. The actress took to Twitter to announce this project. It is also being said that Trisha will have an equally important role and screen time as Sethupathi.[4] This will be the second time that Vijay Sethupathi and director Prem Kumar will team up for a film after their comic caper ‘Naduvula Konjam Pakkatha Kaanom’ in 2012.[3]
The first-look poster was released on 14 February 2017, coinciding with Valentines Day. The technical team includes cinematography by N. Shanmuga Sundaram who also did Aandavan Kattalai, music by Govind Vasantha, edit by R. Govindaraj, art work by Vinoth Raj Kumar and lyrics by Uma Devi and Karthik Netha.[5] An official callout has been made by 96 team for young aspiring actors to perform as young Vijay Sethupathu and Trisha.[6]
The film entered production on 12 June 2017 at Kumbakonam.[7] Vijay Sethupathi is revealed to play the role of a travel photographer and will be travelling extensively during the shoot. The crew was looking for suitable actors to play the younger versions of Sethupathi and Trisha's characters, [8] and regarding the title the director says that 'the film revolves around characters who belong to the same batch – 1996, the years during which one does their schooling and college define their character. The year '96 plays a key role in this romantic film, and hence this title'[9][10] The story follows Vijay Sethupathi at ages 16, 19 and 37.
