The Lobby Day 2020 was a peaceful gun rights protest that took place on January 20, 2020 at the Virginia State Capitol in Richmond, Virginia. The protest is an extension of the Second Amendment sanctuary movement and is organized by the Virginia Citizens Defense League.
Background
Lobby Day is an annual event sponsored by the Virginia Citizens Defense League.[1]
The 2020 protest received international attention and a greater turnout than previous years because a Democratic majority in both the Virginia House of Delegates and state Senate was elected in 2019, alongside incumbent Democratic Governor Ralph Northam.[1][2][3] Northam declared a state of emergency ahead of the event,[4][5] saying the demonstrators were "coming to intimidate and to cause harm." President Donald Trump also acknowledged the event,[6] and stated that the United States Constitution is under attack in the state of Virginia.[7]
Demonstration
22,000 people demonstrated in favor of gun rights. This was less than half of the number of attendees predicted by rally's organizers.[8] The event ended peacefully.[9][10][11]
A 21-year-old woman from Richmond was arrested for wearing a bandanna across her face; she was released on her own recognizance.[12][13]
Speakers at the event included Republican State Senator Amanda Chase, Republican Delegate Nick Freitas, and Republican Delegate John McGuire.[14]
