KFXA is a television station based out of Cedar Rapids, Iowa. KFXA is an affiliate of the Fox television network. It is the primary Fox affiliate for northeast Iowa, including Cedar Rapids, Iowa City, Waterloo, and Dubuque. Owned by Second Generation of Iowa, Ltd. and operated under a local marketing agreement (LMA) by the Sinclair Broadcast Group, KFXA is sister station to CBS affiliate KGAN. Sinclair also owns all physical assets of KFXA except its broadcast license. Its transmitter is located in Van Horne. KFXA airs Northern Iowa Panthers sports and the Iowa high school state championships in football, wrestling and boys and girls basketball. Syndicated programs on KFXA include Family Guy, The Simpsons, Seinfeld, Divorce Court and Judge Joe Brown.
History
KFXA signed on as KOCR-TV on February 1, 1988, with studios at 605 Boyson Rd. NE in Cedar Rapids. It was a Fox affiliate from the beginning. The station was owned by Gerald Fitzgerald and operated by Metro Program Network, Inc., until financial problems forced KOCR off the air on October 6, 1994. National Football League games were carried on CBS affiliate KGAN after that, while cable systems in Cedar Rapids and Iowa City offered the national Foxnet feed in KOCR's place instead.[1] In 1995 the station was purchased by Second Generation of Iowa and was relaunched as KFXA, going back on the air on August 13.[2] After Second Generation took possession of the station, they entered into a local marketing agreement with KDUB of Dubuque, which operated on UHF channel 40. The station's call letters were changed from KDUB to KFXB, and the affiliation for that station was changed from ABC to Fox. They further decided that KFXB would for the most part retransmit what was shown on KFXA, as the stations were branded as "Fox 28 & 40." The only exception would be that KFXB would produce and show its own newscast for Dubuque viewers. Eventually, Second Generation decided to close the Dubuque news operation, and have a combined news operation based out of Cedar Rapids. In 2004, the LMA between Second Generation and Dubuque TV Limited Partnership ended as KFXB was sold to the Christian Television Network. When that was done, KFXA became the primary Fox network station for northeast Iowa. In the fall of 2005, KFXA launched Good Day Iowa which aired from 7-9 AM weekdays. Good Day Iowa was cancelled in July 2007. Under an agreement with Sinclair Broadcasting Group, Second Generation shares facilities and has merged certain operations with KGAN, Sinclair's CBS affiliate in Cedar Rapids. KGAN produces Fox News at Nine for KFXA; until September 2, 2008, it produced a newscast for fellow Fox affiliate KDSM-TV in Des Moines. On February 1, 2008, Sinclair announced that it would purchase KFXA outright for $19 million.[3] That announcement was only partially true, since the Sinclair press release mentioned only that Sinclair had acquired the non-license assets of KFXA but holds an option to acquire the station's license (which Sinclair has yet to exercise as of April 2009). At 11:59PM on February 17, 2009, KFXA's digital signal remained on channel 27 when the analog to digital conversion completed, with the "KFXA" callsign being legally transferred from the now-defunct analog channel 28 to the digital channel 27, and the "KFXA-DT" callsign being permanently discontinued. KFXA is also considered an alternate CBS affiliate airing that network's programs when KGAN is unable to do so such as during a breaking news emergency or local special. The renewal of a retransmission dispute between Sinclair and Mediacom threatened to have the station removed from the cable provider's lineup. Failure to reach a new agreement could have prevented the primary cable company in the state of Iowa from having access to the 2010 Orange Bowl, which aired on FOX with the local favorite Iowa Hawkeyes football team defeating the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets.[4] On December 31, 2009, the expiration date of the original agreement, Sinclair agreed to give Mediacom an eight-day extension that would keep the Orange Bowl on the air.[5] Two days after the game, the parties agreed to a one-year carriage deal.[6]
