AlistairMcMillan (talk · contribs)
AlistairMcMillan has been with us for nearly a year and a half, having joined us on March 6, 2004. During his 17 months on the project, Kate tells us he has aquired 10,668 edits, and he has aquired the adoring admiration of his fellow Wikipedians on the hundreds of Apple Macintosh, Scotland-related, Star Trek, and technology articles he has contributed to, among other topics he is so expert in.
He has contributed in all Wikipedia namespaces, and has been a model editor, producing and collaborating on many of our finest articles. He also watches many articles for vandalism, and is a tireless defender of their content. I believe he is well qualified to use the tools of adminship. Func( t, c ) 15:02, 5 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Support
- Support. I thought he already was one...which, I have recently discovered, is a common mistake on Wikipedia. Is Geogre an admin? Bishonen? Theresa knott? Raul654? Jimbo Wales? One can never be too sure around here.... :) Func( t, c ) 15:12, 5 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

- Support - yet another hard worker doing lots of categorizing, wikifying, and redirecting. I think that occasional participation in Wikipedia's voting and discussion isn't a major issue, as he shows himself to be a great article contributor and hard worker. Also seems to have an acceptable knowlege of Wikipolicy. — Stevey7788 (talk) 19:56, 7 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
- Support. After 10,000+ edits, has definitely demonstrated he's a reasonable, productive, dedicated Wikipedian and would make a great admin. --MPerel ( talk | contrib) 03:37, 8 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

- Since I don't know the editor really well, I wanted to make sure there weren't any skeletons in the closet that would come popping out. Having seen nothing to suggest that Alistair isn't ready for adminship, I vote Support. -- Essjay · Talk 10:40, August 12, 2005 (UTC)
Oppose
Neutral
- Neutral I feel uncomfortable voting either way for someone I'e neer heard of :-/ Although I do trust the judgement of Func, Bluemoose, and Andrevan, I'm not gonna vote... yet. Redwolf24 00:19, 6 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
- Neutral, much as per Redwolf24. The reason you've not heard of him is the extraordinarily small number of Wikipedia: and Talk: (etc) space edits. His talk page doesn't appear to reveal evil-minded tendencies, however. But the answer to Q1 below is rather unconvincing. -Splash 02:22, 6 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
- Neutral I had a negative experience with this user, however they apologized. Although the user was wrong, the fact that they were big enough to admit it shows that they should be considered for admin status (because we all know how hard it is to admit we were wrong ;) ). That said, I do not know enough about this user to vote for them, so I vote neutrally. Paul Cyr 09:25, 6 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
- For the sake of full disclosure, what bad experience was this? Can you provide a link. Thanks. Harro5 03:18, August 7, 2005 (UTC)
- These are the edits in question. I was reverting this edit [1] and I left this [2] edit summary. I thought I was being funny. AlistairMcMillan 03:23, August 7, 2005 (UTC)

- I'm not thrilled by the sentiment behind the answer below to question one. The user effectively wishes they could have had the sole ability to edit a page on a massive story to ensure they were pleased with how it looked. That might be a skewed look on the answer, but we've had similar comments by admins on the George W. Bush talk page, and it isn't a good way for an admin to use their powers. Harro5 03:16, August 7, 2005 (UTC)
- I seem to have explained myself badly. The entire page content was duplicated, not just once but at least twice as far as I remember. I tried a couple of times to remove the duplicated content, but couldn't get my edits through because other people were submitting their edits so fast. An admin then blocked the page and cleaned it up. It's nothing to do with me wanting to enforce my views on the page, I wasn't even planning to contribute anything to the page I was just reading it to keep up to date when I notice the duplication happening. AlistairMcMillan 03:28, August 7, 2005 (UTC)
- Here is my attempt to revert the duplicated material [3] and here is User:Arwel Parry blocking the page to revert the dups two edits later [4] after an anon user restored the duplicated material with his edit. AlistairMcMillan 03:32, August 7, 2005 (UTC)
- Not thrilled with the joking manor you dealt with the anon on the Windows Vista page, but I'll vote neutral. Harro5 03:49, August 7, 2005 (UTC)

Questions for the candidate
A few generic questions to provide guidance for voters:
- 1. What sysop chores, if any, would you anticipate helping with? (Please read the page about administrators and the administrators' reading list.)
- A. Aside from continuing to do what I've already been doing (reverting vandalism, making sure pages are formatted correctly), the main thing that springs to mind right now is that on the day of the
7 July 2005 London bombings21 July 2005 London bombings, when edits were flying in fast and furious and the entire page content was duplicated, I would have liked the ability to protect the page to clean it up.

- 2. Of your articles or contributions to Wikipedia, are there any about which you are particularly pleased, and why?
- A. These spring to mind.
- Glasgow Green - I was surprised to find we didn't have a page on the Green at all before and I knew very little about the park. So I spent some time gathering information from various sources, visited the park to take some photos and I think (I could be wrong) that I put it together quite well.
- James Allchin and Salem Chalabi - Again I was surprised to find we didn't have articles on them at all before. There was very little information about Allchin on the net aside from his Microsoft bio, so I had to hunt around for a while to find any detail on him.
- Hierarchical File System and File Allocation Table - Both articles existed before, but they either had very little information about how they were actually structured or the information was incomplete. I added information on their Design that I tried to make sure wasn't too technically complex.
- 3. Have you been in any conflicts over editing in the past or do you feel other users have caused you stress? How have you dealt with it and how will you deal with it in the future?
- A. The only real dispute that comes to mind (aside from stuff that was quickly resolved after a comment or two back and forth on Talk pages), is a disagreement with User:Alyeska over content that he wanted in Star Trek articles. I said it was speculative, he disagreed. I'm not happy with how I dealt with the situation. I should have taken a step back and got other editors involved.
