Williamson fails WP:ATHLETE. He has not played for a fully professional club; he played for Brechin City F.C., who are semi-professional. He has played for the Shetland Islands, but that team is not a national football team in the normal sense of the phrase. Most of their matches have been games against their neighbour Orkney. Shetland does not compete in international tournaments, such as the World Cup or the European Championship. Any Shetland player who was of a high enough standard would play for Scotland. - Delete, doesn't meet the WP:ATHLETE requirements, which are fairly lax to start with. Stifle (talk) 21:08, 20 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
- Keep. I'm not sure the Any Shetland player who was of a high enough standard would play for Scotland argument holds. If so there would only be 25 or so active Scottish players at any one time in Wikipedia, and I think there may be more than that. As far as Shetland goes - they seem to play a lot of internationals, article notes 16 different opponents. Nfitz (talk) 21:44, 20 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
- What you're basically saying is that every player who plays for Shetland is notable. They don't play in what is commonly understood as international football. Their opponents are other islands or island groups, only one of which has since been admitted to full international football (Faroe Islands national football team). There is basically zero coverage of these matches in the mainstream media; the only time I've ever read about the Shetland team was a historic piece about how they beat the Faroes in a match 30 years ago, in the week before a Scotland v Faroes match. My point about being good enough to play for Scotland is not to say that every Scottish footballer on WP needs to be of that standard, the point is that the Shetland team is a sub-national representative team, effectively like a county team. If there was a Shetlander of a high enough standard, he would play for Scotland, in the same way that Channel Islanders play for England (eg Matthew Le Tissier or Graeme Le Saux). - Delete per WP:ATHLETE - playing for a non-UEFA and non-FIFA "national" team is not a proof of notability, we have similar teams about Padania, for instance, and I doubt their players are notable by any stretch of imagination. --Angelo (talk) 10:14, 21 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
- Delete, fails notability at WP:ATHLETE. If he was to be notable for playing international football, it'd be for Scotland, not the Shetland Islands. --Jimbo[online] 09:42, 22 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
- Delete, fails WP:ATHLETE and WP:N. As the article states, Williamson "represents his County side of the Shetland Islands" (my italics). Shetland isn't a nation, it's a county of Scotland (I think they're now called "council areas") which happens to lie offshore, just as Anglesey is a county of Wales and the Isle of Wight is a county of England. As such its representative side doesn't play international football. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 11:12, 24 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
- Delete - fails WP:ATHLETE and WP:N and representing Shetland does not count as competing in international football. -- ChrisTheDude (talk) 11:21, 24 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
